Oscar Piastri Takes Sprint Pole as Norris and Verstappen Gear Up for High-Stakes Battle at Brazilian GP

Lando Norris has admitted that his careful approach in battles with Max Verstappen has, at times, cost him valuable points in the 2024 Formula 1 season. The McLaren driver has faced scrutiny over his cautious style, especially as his championship rivalry with Verstappen intensifies on the track. Their latest clash at the United States GP saw Verstappen push Norris wide twice without penalty, sparking a debate over the FIA’s handling of Verstappen’s aggressive tactics.

Following the race in Mexico, however, the FIA came down harder on Verstappen, issuing two penalties for similar incidents, a decision McLaren viewed as a validation of Norris’s approach. Norris, though, has vowed to re-evaluate how he manages close combat with Verstappen, while emphasizing he won’t compromise his values or give in to outside pressure.

“Sometimes I’ve been on the too kind side, whether I was attacking or defending,” Norris admitted. “But I think I’ve always made good decisions, and sometimes I’ve paid the price for not being aggressive enough. But I know how to keep the car in one piece, and that’s something I’ve done for a while.”

Norris highlighted that, behind the scenes, he often takes evasive action to avoid potential collisions, even when these maneuvers go unnoticed by viewers. “Inside the car, you know, ‘I’m only here because I avoided this or that person,’” he explained. “There are more moments like that than people realize, and they’re part of the challenges we face.”

While Norris has acknowledged the moments where his restraint has cost him, he remains committed to his philosophy of clean racing. Yet, as the battle for the championship heats up, the young Briton may find himself striking a new balance between caution and assertiveness on the track.
