BREAKING NEWS: Sauber Set for Big Shake-Up as Bottas and Zhou Part Ways at Season’s End

In a surprising but somewhat anticipated move, Sauber has confirmed it will part ways with drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The two drivers, who joined forces under the Alfa Romeo banner in 2022, have seen the team endure a steep decline in performance, finishing this year at the back of the grid with no points after 21 rounds.

The decision, announced on Wednesday, marks the end of a two-year partnership that started with promise but faded as Sauber’s performance fell short of expectations. For Bottas, a seasoned F1 veteran, and Zhou, China’s first Grand Prix driver, it’s a bittersweet conclusion to a journey marked by highs and lows, both of which the drivers and team reflected on as they prepare to move forward.

“A situation like this is never easy for anyone,” Bottas said, acknowledging the discussions leading to the decision. “These past years with the team have been an incredible journey, full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments.” Grateful for his experience with Sauber, Bottas confirmed his departure but hinted at optimism for his future in F1, a future he hopes will be more competitive.

For Zhou, who entered F1 as a rookie with Sauber in 2022, the journey has been equally transformative. “I am grateful to the team for giving me a chance in Formula 1,” he said, noting his development as a driver and his historic role as the sport’s first Chinese competitor. Zhou will look to close out the season on a high, aiming for strong finishes in Las Vegas, Doha, and Abu Dhabi as he eyes the next step in his F1 career.

Sauber’s COO and CTO, Mattia Binotto, took the opportunity to thank both drivers for their contributions. “Valtteri has been the embodiment of professionalism and has been invaluable during a pivotal time in our history,” Binotto noted, while praising Zhou for his determination and growth over three challenging seasons. “Scoring points on debut and helping us to P6 in 2022 was a statement of intent, and his off-track commitment is something we’ll always value.”

With Bottas and Zhou’s exit, speculation has intensified around who might fill the vacant seats. Formula 2 sensation Gabriel Bortoleto, who is tipped to claim the F2 title, is rumored to be a frontrunner for a Sauber seat in 2025. Sauber, which will transition to the Audi works team in 2026, appears poised for a complete overhaul to realign with its future goals, potentially building a roster of fresh talent.

The decision to release both drivers comes as the Hinwil team prepares for its next chapter under the looming Audi partnership. While Bottas and Zhou look for new opportunities, Sauber’s roster shake-up indicates a determination to reset, leaving fans eager to see who will lead the team as it gears up for a new era.
