McLaren Locks Out Front Row for Sprint, with Team Orders on the Table to Boost Title Hopes

McLaren’s dynamic duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, have been instrumental in propelling the Woking-based team to the top of the Constructors’ Championship in a thrilling 2024 season. At the Brazilian GP, Piastri secured Sprint pole, with Norris close behind to complete a front-row lockout, giving McLaren a strong advantage in their title quest.

In only his second Formula 1 season, Piastri has proven himself with two wins and seven podium finishes, but it is Norris who stands as the main challenger for the Drivers’ Championship. Piastri acknowledged McLaren’s primary objective in the Sprint: securing a 1-2 finish to strengthen their championship bid, even hinting that team orders could come into play. “We’ll see what the pace is like for both of us,” Piastri said. “First and second is the main objective. I know I’m not in the running for the drivers, so we’ll see.”

If the pair can maintain their momentum, McLaren could capture its first Constructors’ title since 1998, marking over two decades since the team last reigned supreme.

Team Principal Andrea Stella has reinforced McLaren’s commitment to fair and sportsmanlike racing, noting his trust in the FIA’s stewardship to keep competition clean. “We race fair, we race in a correct way, we race in a sportsman-like way,” Stella remarked. “In close fights, the stewarding plays a key role, and we trust them. I think in Mexico this worked very well, and we had good racing.”

McLaren’s faith in the FIA hasn’t come without challenges. The team has been vocal about past rulings, particularly at the Austrian and United States GPs. However, recent penalties, like Max Verstappen’s reprimand for blocking Norris in Mexico, have solidified McLaren’s confidence in the governing body to enforce fair play.

As McLaren eyes both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships, Piastri and Norris have positioned the team to make history once again, with teamwork and strategic play likely to be key to their final push in the season’s closing stages.
