Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Rob Leupen to Exit After 30 Years in Massive Leadership Overhaul

In a significant shift for Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe (TGR-E), longtime FIA WEC boss Rob Leupen is set to depart at the end of 2024, marking the end of a remarkable 30-year journey with Toyota’s motorsport division. The 60-year-old Dutchman, a pillar of Toyota’s endurance racing success, has seen his career span from general manager to managing director, a role he has held since 2015.

Leupen’s departure is part of Toyota’s “renewal of the brand’s leadership structure,” an initiative TGR-E began earlier this year to bring fresh vision into the motorsport outfit. According to an official statement, Toyota confirmed Leupen would step away from all operational duties immediately: “Rob has made an immense contribution to TGR-E and Toyota in motorsport over almost three decades of service. The company places on record its sincere thanks and wishes him success in the next phase of his life.”

This restructuring within TGR-E comes shortly after another industry shakeup: GM Motorsports recently announced that high-profile figures Laura Wontrop Klauser and Christie Bagne are moving from their leadership roles, underscoring a wider wave of changes hitting top-level motorsports.

Leupen’s exit follows the departure of TGR’s long-standing technical director Pascal Vasselon, who was replaced by David Floury at the beginning of the season. This series of strategic leadership changes signals a new era for Toyota Gazoo Racing, one likely focused on innovation and adapting to a fast-evolving motorsports landscape.

The motorsport world will watch closely as Toyota begins a fresh chapter without Leupen, whose influence helped shape TGR-E’s legacy in endurance racing and beyond.
