Mercedes’ 2024 Season Marred by Crashes and Budget Constraints, Wolff Reveals Ahead of Brazilian GP

The 2024 Formula 1 season has been a mixed bag for Mercedes, swinging from three Grand Prix wins to crashing out of title contention. While the team’s W15 car has shown potential, Mercedes has struggled with consistency, and a string of costly crashes has left team principal Toto Wolff reflecting on the toll this has taken on their season.

The Brackley-based team has been plagued by incidents, with crashes from drivers like George Russell in Austin and Mexico, and rookie Kimi Antonelli’s Monza crash, all of which have eaten into Mercedes’ cost cap. Wolff admitted that while he encourages drivers to push hard, the financial toll has put the team on the back foot. “In cost cap land… it’s a tricky situation,” Wolff said. “I love a driver to push, and I’d rather crash and know what the car is capable of doing than not.”

In a bid to salvage the season, Mercedes has planned one final upgrade package for the Brazilian GP, bringing new floors for the W15. However, Wolff confirmed this will be the last update of the season, saying, “We will be having two upgrade packages in Brazil, two floors, but that’s basically it. There’s nothing else that’s going to come.”

With only four races left and 366 points in the Constructors’ standings, Mercedes will focus on maximizing results with the W15’s final upgrades. For Lewis Hamilton, who’s set to leave Mercedes at the end of the season, these races mark the closing chapter of an iconic partnership. The team and Hamilton will be aiming to end on a high as they push through the remaining races.

As Mercedes grapples with the budget cap and lingering inconsistencies, the season’s final stretch promises a fascinating ride for fans as the team bids to make the most of its challenging 2024 campaign.
