The Formula 1 world was left buzzing after last weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix, where a fierce clash between Sergio Perez and Liam Lawson stole the spotlight. The race intensified speculation around Perez’s future at Red Bull Racing, as Lawson, one of the potential contenders for his seat, held his ground in a heated duel, leaving Perez frustrated and questioning the rookie’s “attitude.”

Perez, struggling from a challenging qualifying session, started from a lowly 18th on the grid. Despite a five-second penalty for a false start, he was clawing his way up the field until he met resistance from Lawson’s AlphaTauri. Lawson made it clear he wasn’t going to simply step aside for the #11 Red Bull. The resulting clash left Perez with damage that compromised his car’s performance for the rest of the race, eventually relegating him to the back of the pack.

A visibly displeased Perez voiced his frustration, suggesting Lawson “needed to be more humble” if he wants a place in Formula 1. But the young Kiwi stood his ground, defending his decision not to yield without a fight. “I don’t know where he wanted me to go. I gave him space at Turn 4, but he came in super late,” Lawson explained, maintaining that his position was fair. “I wasn’t just going to get out of his way.”

What set off the Red Bull camp even further was Lawson’s retaliatory middle-finger gesture when he later overtook Perez. Though he quickly apologized, admitting his reaction was a “moment thing,” it didn’t soften the reaction from Red Bull higher-ups.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko weighed in, taking a critical view of Lawson’s aggressive defense. “[It was] an unnecessary collision, where I see Lawson as more to blame,” he stated, acknowledging that “getting elbows out” may have been acceptable with other teams but “not the sister team.”

Lawson was frank about his bosses’ response. “I don’t think that’s what Helmut likes,” he admitted. “It’s not my character; it’s not something you should be doing.” As Red Bull contemplates Perez’s future, these tensions may prove pivotal in deciding which driver sits in the Red Bull seat come next season.

With the season nearing its conclusion, Red Bull’s driver lineup hangs in the balance, and the Mexico clash may be the event that tilts the scales.
