Denny Hamlin Backs Tony Stewart’s Exit, Blames NASCAR’s Sponsorship Crisis and Charter Woes for SHR Closure

As the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series finale approaches, a seismic shift is set to rock the sport: Stewart Haas Racing (SHR), a former powerhouse in NASCAR, will cease operations after this season. Co-owners Tony Stewart and Gene Haas cited insurmountable financial issues as their reason, with Stewart recently doubling down on his decision in a podcast interview. He highlighted the dwindling sponsorship landscape, which 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin now asserts is a major challenge impacting every team.

Hamlin, speaking on Stewart’s remarks, highlighted the drastic sponsorship changes that have reshaped NASCAR over the last decade. “Back then, 10 or 15 years ago, teams had Fortune 500 companies lined up to sponsor cars,” Hamlin noted. “Today, it’s a different story. Now we’re seeing many sponsors on one car because we can’t sustain without multiple sources.”

Hamlin explained that financial pressure is pushing teams to claw for every sponsorship dollar, often leading to competition not only with other teams but even NASCAR itself. “It’s tough for teams when NASCAR’s the first to call up potential sponsors, asking them to back the league rather than individual cars,” Hamlin revealed. “This competition just isn’t sustainable, which is why so many owners have left the sport.”

The rising demands from team owners for a larger share of TV revenue have culminated in legal battles. The ongoing lawsuit from 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports challenges NASCAR’s financial setup, seeking more equitable support for teams. Hamlin’s frustration echoes a broader demand for reform, as teams face escalating costs and dwindling sponsorship options.

The closure of SHR underscores the gravity of these issues. Once a championship-winning team, SHR’s impending shutdown shows just how severe NASCAR’s economic landscape has become for even the most successful operations. With Hamlin’s insights adding fuel to the fire, NASCAR’s sponsorship and revenue-sharing model is under scrutiny like never before.

Hamlin and other team owners now await the outcome of the 23XI-FRM lawsuit, hoping it might force NASCAR to address the financial burdens crushing many teams. The fallout from SHR’s closure and this pivotal lawsuit may be a turning point, reshaping the future of NASCAR sponsorships and owner sustainability.
