Kyle Larson: Battling Back with Everything on the Line
Kyle Larson is now seven points below the cutline after a string of bad breaks, including a punctured tire and a late-race spin while fighting for the lead at Homestead. The 2021 NASCAR champion sees Martinsville as a difficult but familiar challenge where he can still make up ground.
“I was going as hard as I could,” Larson said of his Homestead performance. “Martinsville isn’t my best track, but I’ve been a lot better there since joining Hendrick. We just need to qualify well and give it our best shot.” His aggressive driving style and a strong Hendrick track record at Martinsville make him a wildcard threat for a comeback.
Chase Elliott: Win or Go Home
After a fifth-place finish at Homestead, Chase Elliott is still 43 points out of a transfer spot, making his road to the Championship 4 clear: he must win at Martinsville. Despite early setbacks in the Round of 8, including a DNF in Las Vegas, the 2020 Cup Series champion remains optimistic, especially given his past success at Martinsville.
“I just got tighter as the race went on,” Elliott said of Homestead. “But from a pace perspective, it’s been a solid few weeks.” Elliott clinched his title in 2020 with a Martinsville victory, and he’s relying on that same grit to stay alive in the playoffs.
Hendrick’s History of Dominance at Martinsville
Hendrick Motorsports has an impressive track record at Martinsville, winning five of the last eight races there. In April, the team celebrated its 40th anniversary by sweeping the top three spots, with Byron, Larson, and Elliott crossing the line in succession. This performance fuels optimism within the team, and their consistency at this historic track gives each driver a shot to join the Championship 4.
