Norris’s Title Bid Gains Momentum as Tensions with Verstappen Reach New Heights: “Verstappen got what he had coming to him”

Lando Norris’s pursuit of the Formula 1 title received a significant boost following the Mexican Grand Prix, narrowing the gap to 47 points behind leader Max Verstappen with just four races left. Reflecting on the intense on-track battle that saw Verstappen penalized twice, Norris called out the reigning champion for pushing the limits of fair play.

“I go into every race expecting a tough battle with Max,” Norris stated. “It’s clear that his only job is to beat me, and he’ll sacrifice himself to do that, like he did today. I want those tough battles…but fair ones. Today was not fair, clean racing, and he got what he had coming to him.”

Earlier this season, Verstappen seemed destined to secure his fourth title without much challenge. However, McLaren’s rapid improvement has turned the championship race into a nail-biter, with Verstappen now winless in the last 10 races and the competition with Norris intensifying. The latest skirmish in Mexico follows their clash in Texas, where Norris received a penalty for going off track while attempting a pass, only for Verstappen to face similar penalties in Mexico.

When asked if Verstappen’s tactics were harsher in Mexico than Austin, Norris replied, “Probably, yes. Today, I felt like I just had to avoid collisions, and that’s not how you want to race.” With Verstappen holding a commanding championship lead, Norris suggested that his rival may be racing with an “all or nothing” mentality, knowing he has a points buffer to lean on.

“I’m doing my job, and I’m happy with my weekend,” Norris continued. “But it’s not my job to control him. He knows how to drive, and I’m sure he knows that today was probably a bit over the limit.”

As the title fight heads into the final rounds, the rivalry between Norris and Verstappen is only set to heat up. With everything at stake, fans can expect fireworks as the two contenders push each other to the limit in the quest for the 2024 championship.
