Tony Stewart’s Bold Exit from NASCAR: Why the Sport’s Future is Bright, but Stewart-Haas Racing Won’t Be Waiting

Stewart-Haas Racing's Chase Briscoe (14) zooms past the pit at the NASCAR Cup Series at the Pocono Raceway on July 14, 2024

As NASCAR faces a period of intense challenges, former Cup Series champion and Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner Tony Stewart has shared his perspective on the sport’s future—and his reasons for stepping away. Despite his faith in NASCAR’s resilience, Stewart believes it’s time for him and his team to leave the sport, marking the end of an era.

NASCAR has been struggling with major issues, including a decline in top sponsors, an anti-trust lawsuit from the 23XI-FRM coalition, and growing competition from other motorsport series. For Stewart, the ongoing conflicts and revenue disputes between team owners and NASCAR itself are among the biggest concerns. He discussed his decision on the Happy Hour podcast, where he explained that the constant tension in the sport contributed to his choice to step back.

“It’s just a different time in the sport,” Stewart remarked. “The sport’s going to be healthy, it’s going to survive… but I’m happy at this point in my life to make this change.” Initially, the team hadn’t planned to close at the end of 2024, but circumstances changed as Stewart realized he no longer wanted to be part of the struggles plaguing the industry.

For Stewart, saying goodbye to Stewart-Haas Racing isn’t easy. The emotional toll of closing down a team he co-founded with Gene Haas, and parting ways with team members who have been with him for over 16 years, was evident after the Talladega race. Stewart spent a full day with his crew at the team’s Charlotte shop, taking in the memories of those he may never see again. “I got to see as many people as I could at the shop… knowing that some of those people I’ve known for 16 years, and I may never ever see them again.”

While the NASCAR legend remains optimistic about the sport’s long-term survival, he admits that this is the right moment for him to pursue a more peaceful life, focusing on family and personal ventures away from NASCAR’s intense demands. Stewart’s exit marks a significant shift, and the racing world will be watching to see how he adjusts—and how NASCAR tackles its challenges without one of its most influential figures at the helm.

As Stewart steps into a new chapter, NASCAR faces a turning point. His departure underscores the need for change and unity in a sport striving to overcome its current challenges and secure its future.
