Mercedes Seeks Redemption in Mexico After Mixed COTA Outing

Mercedes had a challenging weekend at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton suffering a DNF while George Russell clawed his way up to P6 after starting from the back of the grid. The team missed out on crucial championship points due to Hamilton’s retirement, and Team Principal Toto Wolff is determined to bounce back at the upcoming Mexican Grand Prix.

Following the disappointment in Austin, Wolff emphasized the importance of extracting consistent performance from the W15. “Our performance in Texas showed that there is inherent performance in the car. Our challenge is extracting this consistently,” Wolff said, highlighting the unpredictability of the W15’s behavior this season.

As the season winds down, Mercedes is focusing on improving its immediate performance while also gathering valuable data for 2025. Wolff views the remaining races as critical for laying the groundwork for next year’s W16, which is expected to be an evolution of the current car. “We have five more races to work on this before the end of the season. It is important that we do so, not only for our immediate performance but to also set ourselves up well for 2025,” he explained.

Although Mercedes is out of the running for the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, they hold a solid fourth place with no immediate pressure from Aston Martin in P5. This gives the Brackley-based team the freedom to experiment with the W15 in the remaining races, potentially setting up Hamilton and Russell for stronger performances and possible victories if they can unlock the car’s potential.

With Mexico’s high-altitude challenges awaiting, Wolff remains optimistic about Mercedes’ chances of extracting more from their car and making a statement in the remaining rounds of the season.
