Land Rover Under Fire: Angry Defender Owners Sue Over Fragile Windshields That Won’t Survive

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is facing legal backlash in the United States as owners of the 2020-2022 Land Rover Defender models take the automaker to court, alleging the vehicles are plagued by dangerously fragile windshields that crack and shatter with minimal impact. Far from the rugged image of a vehicle designed to conquer the toughest terrains, these Defenders appear unable to handle even a minor pebble on the road.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, highlights a string of complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by disgruntled owners, who claim that their windshields shatter spontaneously or after barely perceptible impacts. For a vehicle marketed as a tough off-roader, the issues paint a picture of fragility and frustration.

One of the plaintiffs, recounted his frustrating experience after purchasing a 2020 Defender. In March 2022, windshield cracked after being struck by a small pebble. The damage rapidly spread, and to make matters worse, was told by Land Rover Boise that replacement windshields weren’t immediately available. After a month-long wait for the windshield to be replaced, his troubles continued. In July 2023, his new windshield cracked again, costing him over $2,100. Fast forward to March of this year, and Seiber was back in the same position, shelling out $2,471 for yet another replacement.

But this experience isn’t the worst. Another plaintiff has gone through a staggering five windshields in just four years. Yes, five windshields—on a vehicle supposedly built to climb mountains and traverse rivers. It’s barely surviving suburban driveways.

The lawsuit alleges that the windshields are either made from subpar materials or there’s a structural defect in the Defender itself. It also claims that Jaguar Land Rover is well aware of the defect but has refused to fix or replace the faulty windshields under warranty.

“The windshield defect poses an extreme safety hazard to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians,” the lawsuit warns. “A spontaneously shattering or cracking windshield can impair the driver’s view, distract the driver, and result in dislodged glass that can injure drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.”

Defender owners are seeking compensation for damages, including reimbursement for windshield replacements, along with attorneys’ fees, court costs, and a jury trial.

This lawsuit casts a shadow over Jaguar Land Rover’s reputation as a maker of durable, adventure-ready vehicles, as the Defender—once celebrated for its toughness—now faces scrutiny for a vulnerability no off-road vehicle should have.
