Max Verstappen’s Frustration Mounts as RB20 Struggles at US GP: “These Tyres Are Just Not Good!”

Oracle Red Bull racing driver Max Verstappen rounds turn one during the sprint race at the Formula 1 Pirelli United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024.

Max Verstappen, fresh off a dominant win in the sprint race, found himself battling more than just his rivals at the 2024 United States Grand Prix. Despite a promising start and the hope of maximizing points from the front row, the reigning world champion faced significant struggles with the performance of his Red Bull RB20.

The Dutchman’s bid for pole position was thwarted by a late-session crash by George Russell during Q3, but Verstappen still managed to secure a front-row start. However, his hopes of taking the lead at the start of the race were dashed by the blistering pace of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. To make matters worse, Verstappen’s RB20 was plagued by persistent issues with tire degradation and braking, leaving the 27-year-old unable to mount a serious challenge.

Verstappen’s frustration boiled over on team radio as he voiced his dissatisfaction with the car’s handling, citing severe tire and braking issues that hindered his ability to attack.

“These tyres are just not good. I can’t brake. I can’t attack anything,” Verstappen fumed over the radio, as he struggled to keep up with the Ferraris and fend off McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was breathing down his neck for a podium spot.

Despite his best efforts, Verstappen found himself trailing both Ferraris for most of the race, unable to replicate the dominant pace he had shown earlier in the weekend. Red Bull’s performance woes have been a recurring theme at the Circuit of the Americas, and they once again appeared to rear their head in Sunday’s race.

Verstappen’s inability to claim victory at the US GP means he missed the chance to break the world record for most wins on American soil, a feat that would have further cemented his legacy in the sport. Instead, the three-time world champion was left fighting to retain a podium finish in the face of relentless pressure from Norris.

Although Verstappen’s lead in the drivers’ standings remains relatively secure, the struggles in Austin highlight a worrying trend for Red Bull. The RB20’s inconsistent performance has put Verstappen under pressure to maintain his championship momentum as the season winds down.

Despite the setback, Verstappen has managed to keep a positive outlook, recognizing that his substantial lead in the championship still provides a buffer. However, it’s clear that Red Bull will need to address their issues urgently if they hope to keep their star driver comfortably ahead as the 2024 season reaches its critical stages.
