Toto Wolff Explodes After George Russell’s “Total Joke” Penalty at US GP

Tensions boiled over for Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff during the 2024 US Grand Prix as he furiously backed George Russell after the Briton was hit with a controversial five-second time penalty. In a race weekend already marked by disaster for Mercedes, Wolff didn’t hold back when race control penalized Russell for forcing a Sauber off track during the opening stages of the race.

Mercedes had been enduring a nightmare weekend in Austin, with Lewis Hamilton’s shocking DNF and Russell fighting in the midfield, struggling to find pace against competitors like Red Bull and Haas. When news of the time penalty came over the radio, Russell couldn’t believe his ears.

“What?” Russell exclaimed, clearly baffled by the decision.

But the loudest voice came from Wolff, who was fuming over the stewards’ judgment. The Austrian team principal, known for his usually composed demeanor, was livid, labeling the penalty as a “total joke.”

“Total joke, George, with the penalty. Total joke,” Wolff said over the radio, voicing his frustration in no uncertain terms.

The penalty added another layer of difficulty for Russell, who was already grappling with a challenging race, stuck in the middle of the pack. As the Silver Arrows continued to struggle with performance, any hopes of a podium finish for Russell seemed to slip away, especially with the fierce pace of Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s front-runners, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes’ poor showing in Austin could prove detrimental to their campaign in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, with Red Bull and Ferrari both capitalizing on the team’s misfortunes. With Hamilton out and Russell unable to make significant gains, the team’s strategy came under heavy scrutiny.

For Wolff and his team, the US GP will be a race they’ll want to forget quickly. The once-dominant Silver Arrows now face a serious challenge to regroup and recalibrate before the next race, with fans hoping that this disastrous weekend isn’t a sign of things to come for the remainder of 2024.
