Max Verstappen Fires Up Debate: “Oscar Piastri Too Good for Number Two Role”

Max Verstappen has sparked fresh controversy in Formula 1 by declaring that McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is “too good” to be relegated to a number two driver role, pushing the narrative that the young Australian shouldn’t play second fiddle to teammate Lando Norris. However, Piastri has been quick to deny that he’s been pigeonholed into a supporting role, despite McLaren’s recent decision to prioritize Norris in their championship push.

With McLaren publicly backing Norris in his title fight, the situation has become a hot topic. The Woking-based team confirmed ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that Norris, sitting higher in the drivers’ standings, would be prioritized as they eye a double championship. Norris trails Verstappen by 52 points, keeping him in contention for the title, while Piastri is two places behind.

Despite the team’s strategy and Norris’ clear lead, Piastri has taken two victories this season, compared to Norris’ three, and remains a critical asset for McLaren. He recently revealed his willingness to sacrifice a race win to boost his teammate’s championship aspirations. However, Verstappen’s comments have raised questions over whether Piastri should be content with that arrangement.

“Oscar is operating at too high a level to be used as a number two,” Verstappen said, highlighting his belief that Piastri is capable of challenging for wins and shouldn’t be cast in a supporting role.

While Piastri appreciates the sentiment from Verstappen, he remains focused on his own performances and denies that he sees himself as a subordinate to Norris. “I don’t view it that way,” Piastri said, addressing the media. “We’ve both got the same car, the same opportunities, and my job is to deliver results.”

The Australian driver, who has impressed in his rookie season, reiterated that McLaren’s strategic decisions don’t detract from his own ambitions. “If I perform well and deserve it, I’ll go for it. I’m not giving up everything for Lando’s benefit. Baku was a perfect example of how we can both compete,” he stated, referring to the Azerbaijan GP, where the team navigated a balanced approach between its drivers.

However, Piastri is also mindful of his team’s collective goals, understanding that strong individual performances naturally aid McLaren’s overall championship fight. “I want to perform as best as I can. That’s the biggest contribution I can make—whether it’s for my own results or helping Lando in the championship battle. If I can win, I’ll go for the win. If not, I’ll still be aiming for the best possible result,” Piastri affirmed.

While Verstappen’s remarks have cast a spotlight on McLaren’s internal dynamics, Piastri is determined to keep his head down and focus on maximizing his own potential over the remaining six races of the season. The Australian knows that consistent performances will not only bolster his own standing but also help McLaren in their bid to dethrone Red Bull from the top of the Constructors’ standings.

As the F1 season races toward its conclusion, the debate over Piastri’s role within McLaren will continue to fuel speculation. But one thing remains clear: the Australian driver isn’t backing down from his quest for victory—regardless of team orders.
