Sebastian Vettel Backs Verstappen in Title Showdown Against Norris, But Red Bull’s Uncertainty Lingers

The 2024 Formula 1 championship battle is heading towards a thrilling conclusion, with Max Verstappen holding a slender 52-point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris. With six races left on the calendar, the title fight is far from over, and the US Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) could be pivotal. As excitement builds, former world champion Sebastian Vettel weighed in on the title clash, placing his bets on Verstappen to secure his fourth consecutive championship.

Despite McLaren boasting the fastest car on the grid at the moment, Vettel still believes Verstappen has the edge. In a recent interview, Vettel acknowledged the competitive nature of the title fight but expressed his belief that the Dutchman will maintain his lead over the rapidly closing Norris.

“I hope it goes down to the wire, as a fan, it’s great to watch,” Vettel said. “If I had to bet, I’d still back Max. He’s the favorite, and he’s shown time and again that he can handle the pressure.”

Interestingly, if Verstappen does clinch the 2024 title, he will equal Vettel’s record of four consecutive world championships—a feat Vettel achieved with Red Bull from 2010 to 2013.

However, despite Vettel’s confidence, Verstappen himself remains cautiously optimistic heading into the US GP. Red Bull has introduced significant upgrades to the RB20, particularly around the floor area, in a bid to reclaim their dominance. The team’s performance has been inconsistent this season, starting with seven wins in the first ten races, only to go winless in the next eight.

“We don’t expect to suddenly have the most dominant car,” Verstappen admitted. “We know the limitations, and we’re trying to improve. Monza was a wake-up call, and these upgrades are based on the lessons we learned there.”

The US Grand Prix at COTA is shaping up to be a crucial weekend for Red Bull. If their upgrades work as intended, it could provide the boost Verstappen needs to fend off Norris and strengthen his title bid. But if the improvements fall short, the Dutchman may find himself in an even tighter race with the McLaren driver as the season nears its conclusion.

As Vettel, Verstappen, and the entire F1 community brace for the upcoming showdown in Texas, all eyes are on whether Red Bull can overcome their recent struggles and keep their championship hopes alive. The stakes are higher than ever, with both the driver’s and constructor’s titles hanging in the balance.
