The Honda Prelude is Back! Iconic Japanese Coupé Set for a 2026 Comeback After 25 Years

Honda enthusiasts, rejoice! The iconic Honda Prelude is making its long-awaited return, with the first prototype recently spotted testing in Germany. After a 25-year hiatus, the beloved two-door coupé will officially be back on the road in 2026, and it looks set to bring a perfect blend of modern design and cutting-edge hybrid technology.

A sleek concept of the new Prelude made waves when it was revealed last year, and the car’s European debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed only heightened the anticipation. Now, spy shots of the camouflaged prototype show that the production version will closely follow the stunning lines of the concept, staying true to the sharp, athletic design that captured attention at Goodwood.

Among the standout details carried over are the slim headlights connected by a thin slat across the aggressive front nose, flush door handles, and a large rear windscreen. Even the rear end is expected to feature a full-width light bar, hidden beneath the camouflage, giving the Prelude a thoroughly modern look.

A Hybrid Heart Under the Hood

While the exterior is a clear evolution of the Prelude’s sporty lineage, the real mystery lies under the hood. Honda has confirmed that the 2026 Prelude will feature hybrid technology, but specifics have been kept under wraps. However, Honda’s chief engineer, Tomoyuki Yamagami, hinted that the new Prelude is the culmination of 25 years of hybrid research and development, positioning it as a showcase of Honda’s hybrid expertise.

It’s likely that the Prelude will share its powertrain with the Honda Civic hatchback’s ‘e’ hybrid system. This setup includes a 2.0-liter direct-injection petrol engine paired with two electric motors to drive the front wheels. A small 1.05kWh battery adds extra punch at higher speeds and enables emissions-free driving around town. While the Civic produces 181bhp and 315Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Prelude received a performance boost.

Type R Power? Maybe One Day…

For those hoping the Prelude will pack even more of a punch, Yamagami has confirmed that the turbocharged 324bhp four-cylinder engine from the Honda Civic Type R would fit in the new Prelude’s chassis. However, there are no immediate plans for a high-performance variant. Despite this, Honda has hinted that the new Prelude’s handling will be influenced by lessons learned from the Type R’s dynamic setup, ensuring that this new coupé will be a joy to drive.

A Look to the Future

Set to be unveiled sometime in 2025 before its official showroom debut in 2026, the sixth-generation Honda Prelude promises to be a significant moment for the Japanese marque. With its stunning design, advanced hybrid powertrain, and a nod to the Type R’s handling prowess, the return of the Prelude is shaping up to be one of the most exciting launches in Honda’s modern history.

The countdown is on—Honda’s Prelude is set to storm back onto the scene, and car enthusiasts everywhere will be watching.
