Ferrari Eyes Strong Finish as F1 Season Heats Up: Vasseur Prepares for COTA Showdown

The United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) kicks off the American triple-header in the final stretch of the 2024 Formula 1 season, with Ferrari focused on narrowing the gap to its rivals in a tightly contested battle for championship points. Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur emphasized the importance of preparation as the Scuderia seeks to capitalize on recent upgrades and finish the season strong.

Heading into the Grand Prix, Vasseur highlighted the significance of the Austin race, not only because of its high-speed, technical demands, but also due to the Sprint weekend format. The track’s characteristics offer Ferrari a chance to fully test the recent performance updates that have been introduced across the past few races.

“Austin marks the beginning of an intense end to the season, with six races over eight weeks,” Vasseur said in Ferrari’s official preview. “The COTA circuit, with its high-speed corners, will be a critical test for our upgrades from recent events.”

With Ferrari still fighting for crucial points in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, Vasseur knows the stakes are high. The Sprint format of the United States Grand Prix leaves little room for error, as teams have just one hour of free practice before diving into competitive sessions. This unique challenge increases the importance of preparation, both for the car setup and race strategy.

“The limited practice time at a Sprint weekend means that our work at the factory takes on even more significance,” Vasseur noted. “We have to be fully prepared from the start, as there’s no room for adjustments once qualifying for the Sprint begins.”

Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will need to adapt quickly, as the COTA circuit’s combination of high-speed, medium, and low-speed corners will push their skills and the car’s capabilities to the limit. The long straights and two DRS zones offer prime overtaking opportunities, but tire management will be key to maximizing the car’s performance across the weekend.

“COTA is a track that demands a balance between speed and tire management,” Vasseur explained. “Tire degradation here is high, and the teams that manage their pace best will be in the strongest position come race day.”

Last year’s race saw most teams opt for a three-stop strategy, a trend that could repeat itself this weekend given the circuit’s punishing nature on tires. Ferrari is expected to use Saturday’s Sprint race as a strategic testing ground, gathering valuable data on tire performance to help plan for Sunday’s main event.

Weather will also play a major role, as the Texas heat often pushes track temperatures to extreme levels, placing additional strain on the cars’ engines and tires. Managing this heat will be vital for Ferrari, as they seek to outpace rivals Red Bull, McLaren, and Mercedes in a championship fight that remains wide open.

“We have to be on top of our game,” Vasseur insisted. “The competition is fierce, but we are confident in our preparation and the upgrades we’ve made.”

As the 2024 season heads into its final phase, Ferrari is determined to leave its mark. While both Leclerc and Sainz have shown flashes of brilliance this year, Vasseur believes that consistent, smart racing across the final races can help the team close the gap to their competitors.

“There’s still everything to play for,” Vasseur concluded, underscoring Ferrari’s determination to fight until the very end of the season. “The leading teams are closely matched, and we’re ready to give it everything in the remaining races, starting this weekend in Austin.”

With the clock ticking and only a handful of races left, all eyes will be on Ferrari to see if they can turn their promising upgrades into race-winning performance at the Circuit of the Americas.
