Mario Andretti Backs Oscar Piastri as Future F1 World Champion: ‘He Has the Qualities of a Champion’

Mario Andretti stands in the pit box with Andretti Herta with Marco and Curb-Agajanian driver Marco Andretti (98) on Friday, May 17, 2024, during Fast Friday ahead of the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

LEGENDARY F1 ICON HAILS AUSTRALIAN STAR’S RISE TO THE TOP

Oscar Piastri has been catching the eye of fans and fellow drivers alike, but perhaps the most significant endorsement yet has come from one of motorsport’s all-time greats—Mario Andretti. The former F1 world champion and motorsport legend has named himself a fan of the young Aussie, even going so far as to tip him as a future world champion.

Piastri’s recent form has been nothing short of remarkable. Over the past eight rounds, he has outscored his more seasoned teammate Lando Norris and led McLaren’s resurgence up the grid. His string of performances has not only impressed his team but also earned the admiration of the wider Formula 1 paddock. Among the latest to heap praise on the 22-year-old is Andretti, the 1978 F1 champion, who knows a thing or two about what it takes to reach the top.

ANDRETTI SEES CHAMPIONSHIP POTENTIAL IN PIASTRI

Speaking about Piastri, Andretti was unequivocal in his praise: “I am a fan of Oscar Piastri. He has the qualities of a champion, and he is always there. He may have to support Norris in terms of points, but he’s also a driver who wants to do his part. For the short time he has been in Formula 1, he’s proving to be a future champion.”

For Piastri, receiving such recognition from a motorsport icon like Andretti is a huge vote of confidence. The Australian rookie has already secured his maiden F1 win, and with Andretti’s backing, there’s growing belief that Piastri is on track for greatness in the sport.

LOOKING FORWARD: PIASTRI’S PUSH FOR THE TOP THREE

With just a few races left in the 2024 season, Piastri is eager to build on his already stellar performances. Although he’s often had to play second fiddle to teammate Norris due to team orders, the Aussie is keen to prove himself further and push for more race wins. A strong finish could even see Piastri make a charge for the top three in the driver’s standings, a remarkable achievement in his rookie year.

YOUTH TAKES CENTER STAGE IN FORMULA 1

Piastri isn’t the only young talent turning heads in Formula 1. Williams’ new star, Franco Colapinto, has made an explosive entrance, scoring more points in just three race weekends than his predecessor managed in an entire season. Andretti was equally impressed with Colapinto’s rapid rise: “It’s awesome to see. That’s what the sport is all about—new, young blood coming in and making an impact. Colapinto, he’s showing he belongs here, and that’s great for the future of F1.”

As Formula 1 continues to evolve, the influx of young, dynamic drivers is setting the stage for a new era. With talents like Piastri and Colapinto leading the charge, the future of the sport looks bright.

A CHANGING OF THE GUARD? VERSTAPPEN’S TITLE CHALLENGE UNDER THREAT

While Max Verstappen still holds a 52-point lead in the championship, there’s a sense that the reigning champion may not have it all his own way. Another rising star, who at just 24 years old is rapidly closing the gap, has a real shot at becoming the fifth-youngest world champion ever—ironically, just behind Verstappen on that same list. Should the Brit manage to dethrone Verstappen, it would mark a significant shift in the F1 landscape.

As the 2024 season nears its end, all eyes are on the future stars of the sport. With Andretti’s glowing endorsement of Piastri and a new wave of talent pushing the boundaries, the next chapter of Formula 1 is set to be as thrilling as ever.
