Carlos Sainz Snubs Sauber/Audi for Williams in a Bold 2025 Move

Vowles: Sainz reveals duration of Williams F1 contract

Carlos Sainz has turned the Formula 1 paddock upside down with his decision to reject a lucrative offer from Sauber/Audi, choosing instead to sign with Williams for the 2025 season. The shocking move has left many questioning the logic behind the choice, particularly with Audi preparing for its much-anticipated F1 debut in 2026.

Hulkenberg Unfazed by Sainz’s Snub

Nico Hulkenberg, who recently signed a multi-year deal with Audi, wasn’t caught off guard by Sainz’s decision to turn down a partnership at Sauber. Speaking to the media, Hulkenberg noted, “He obviously hesitated and thought about it for a long time. I believe he has strategic reasons for where he wants to position himself for the future, and that played a big part in his decision.”

Despite the rejection, Hulkenberg seems unbothered, signaling that Sainz’s departure is simply part of the chess game in F1. Now, Sauber is left scrambling to fill the vacant seat alongside Hulkenberg, as they’re yet to announce his 2025 teammate.

Sainz’s Surprising Move to Williams

Sainz’s decision to join Williams may seem unexpected at first glance, but with the Hinwil-based Sauber team languishing at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship, it begins to make sense. Williams, under the leadership of James Vowles, is showing signs of resurgence, and Sainz’s addition is seen as a critical step in their rebuilding process.

Many believed Audi, with its grand plans and Sainz’s father’s close ties to the automotive brand, would be the natural destination for the Spanish driver. However, the prospect of joining a newly-entering works team in 2026, while tempting, might have presented too many uncertainties for a driver of Sainz’s caliber.

Villeneuve Backs Sainz’s Decision

1997 F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve, who clinched his title with Williams, believes Sainz made the right call by steering away from Audi’s unknown future and choosing stability. “Carlos is fast, he has a lot of experience, and he knows how to work with a team,” Villeneuve told Marca. “He will be a much-needed signing for Williams. It was a great move by James Vowles.”

Villeneuve went further, suggesting that Sainz’s other options, like Alpine, were not worth the gamble given their internal chaos, and Audi likely wouldn’t have given him a chance to fight for top results anytime soon.

Sauber’s Setback

Audi’s Sauber project now faces a significant setback in its recruitment efforts. Sauber COO Mattia Binotto has acknowledged that the brand’s late entry into the sport will leave it trailing behind established manufacturers. As Audi works to close that gap, losing out on a high-profile driver like Sainz adds another challenge to its list.

The question now looms: who will Sauber find to partner Hulkenberg, and can Audi’s F1 entry live up to the hype without a marquee driver leading their charge? Only time will tell.

For now, Sainz’s move to Williams marks a pivotal moment for both him and the legendary British team as they set their sights on a brighter future.
