Renault Revives an Icon: The Renault 4 E-Tech Returns as a Nostalgic Electric Crossover

The beloved Renault 4 is making a comeback, but not as the simple, spartan hatchback many remember. Instead, it’s returning in a fresh, modernized form as the Renault 4 E-Tech, an all-electric crossover infused with both nostalgia and cutting-edge technology. Revealed at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, this new Renault 4 is a bold reimagining of the original, blending retro design cues with modern electric mobility.

A Nod to the Past with Modern Flair

First launched in 1961 as Renault’s answer to the Citroën 2CV, the original Renault 4 was a massive hit, selling over 8 million units worldwide by the time production ended in 1994. Now, with its rebirth, the Renault 4 E-Tech continues the legacy with an entirely new purpose. The car’s design cleverly echoes the past—complete with rounded headlights and the signature boxy shape—but now comes equipped for the modern era as a pint-sized SUV. Its jacked-up suspension and plastic body cladding give it a rugged crossover appearance, while the electrically operated sliding fabric roof is a direct homage to the original’s practicality and charm.

The new Renault 4 also features retro-inspired vertical three-part taillights shaped like a pill, reminiscent of its classic predecessor. Additionally, the rear hatch continues down to the rear bumper for easy cargo loading, with the opening positioned just 24 inches (61 cm) from the ground.

Practical and Spacious

At 163 inches (4.14 meters) long, the Renault 4 E-Tech slots neatly between the Clio supermini and Captur subcompact crossover, offering an ideal mix of city-friendly dimensions and spaciousness. It’s larger than the Renault 5, with a 103.1-inch (2.62-meter) wheelbase, providing more legroom for passengers. The interior is practical too, with 14.8 cubic feet (420 liters) of cargo space—substantially more than its hatchback counterpart.

Inside, the dashboard is familiar to Renault fans, featuring a 10.1-inch digital driver’s display and a 10-inch central touchscreen. Thankfully, some physical buttons remain below the central air vents for added convenience. Renault has managed to pack both retro charm and modern functionality into the cabin, providing a driver-friendly environment with a blend of nostalgic touches and advanced tech.

Electric Power and Efficiency

Underpinned by the same AmpR Small platform as the Renault 5, the new Renault 4 E-Tech offers two electric motor options. Buyers can choose between a 121-horsepower (90 kW) motor with 166 lb-ft of torque, or a more powerful 148-horsepower (110 kW) motor with 181 lb-ft of torque. The stronger motor can accelerate the R4 from 0-62 mph in under 8.5 seconds, while sprinting from 50 to 75 mph takes less than seven seconds.

Renault offers two battery options: a 40 kWh pack with a range of over 186 miles (300 km) and a larger 52 kWh pack that delivers up to 249 miles (400 km) on the WLTP cycle. Thanks to DC fast charging capability at up to 100 kW, the battery can be recharged from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes, making it convenient for longer trips. The R4 also supports bidirectional charging, allowing it to act as an energy source.

Light and Agile with Surprising Utility

Despite its electric components, the Renault 4 E-Tech remains relatively lightweight, with the smallest configuration weighing just 3,108 pounds (1,410 kg). The vehicle can tow up to 1,653 pounds (750 kg), adding to its versatility. Its 7.1-inch (18.1 cm) ground clearance, combined with multi-link independent suspension on both the front and rear axles, ensures a smooth and controlled ride—rare for a B-segment vehicle in the mainstream class.

Coming Soon to European Markets

The Renault 4 E-Tech is set to hit European roads in 2025, offering a unique combination of practicality, nostalgic charm, and modern electric technology. With a design that honors the past and powertrains that look to the future, this reimagined icon is poised to make a significant impact in the electric crossover market.

As Renault brings back this classic with a fresh twist, fans of the original R4 and modern electric vehicle enthusiasts alike will find much to appreciate in this exciting new chapter for the iconic nameplate.
