Rinus VeeKay Eyes IndyCar Comeback After Ed Carpenter Racing Departure

Ed Carpenter Racing driver Rinus VeeKay (21) crashes in the third turn Saturday, May 18, 2024, during qualifying for the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Despite an unexpected exit from Ed Carpenter Racing, Rinus VeeKay remains optimistic about his future in the NTT IndyCar Series. The Dutch driver, who spent five years with the team, was replaced by 2016 Indianapolis 500 champion Alexander Rossi, but VeeKay’s focus is clear—he’s determined to get back on the grid for the 2025 season.

“I’m doing well,” VeeKay shared. “It’s definitely a new challenge, but I’m taking it head-on. At 24, with 80 races under my belt and a solid Indy 500 record, I think I offer a lot of value. Teams know I’m not a paying driver, which gives me confidence about the options out there.”

VeeKay, who took a memorable win at the 2021 Grand Prix at Indianapolis, is encouraged by ongoing talks with potential teams, suggesting a promising return to IndyCar might be on the horizon.

“There’s been a lot of shared interest,” he revealed. “We’re having some solid discussions, and things are looking positive.”

While VeeKay is open to the idea of adding IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events to his racing calendar, his primary goal remains clear: securing a full-time IndyCar seat.

“My main focus is IndyCar,” he affirmed. “I’m open to doing IMSA, but my priority is a full IndyCar season. It’s such a competitive series that if you sit out even one year, it takes another to catch up. I’m committed to being there full-time, and I believe I should be.”
