Toto Wolff Admits Mercedes’ Pursuit of Max Verstappen is Over as Team Commits to Antonelli-Russell Line-up

Max Verstappen has dropped a bombshell about his Formula 1 career, declaring that his next decision—whether to stay with Red Bull or jump to a rival team—will be his final one in the sport. With his contract extending until 2028, Verstappen’s comments have fueled intense speculation as Red Bull faces challenges both on and off the track.

The Dutch sensation appeared unstoppable early in the season, winning seven of the first ten races. However, he has since struggled, failing to secure victory in the past eight events—a troubling sign for the reigning champions. Adding to the uncertainty, several high-profile exits from Red Bull’s camp have sparked rumors that Verstappen could be looking for a new home.

Mercedes has made no secret of its interest in luring Verstappen away, with the German giants eager to rebuild their empire. However, discussions have cooled as Mercedes recently locked in its driver line-up. Despite this, Verstappen has remained tight-lipped, revealing little about where his future might lie.

In a candid interview with Sky Italia, Verstappen was firm about his intentions: “My next step, if there is one, will be my last. That could also mean that I renew my existing contract. Everything is still possible at the moment.” This declaration only heightens the mystery around his next move.

Tensions rose further when Red Bull’s advisor, Helmut Marko, hinted at exit clauses in Verstappen’s contract, suggesting the Dutch driver may have an out if Red Bull’s performance declines. Verstappen, however, refused to confirm or deny the existence of such clauses, playing his cards close to the chest: “Maybe, maybe not.”

For now, Verstappen insists he’s focused solely on defending his title, with six races remaining and a 52-point lead over his closest rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris. “It’s not something I’m thinking about right now because there’s so much I want to do better this year,” he stated, downplaying the speculation surrounding his future.

The Red Bull star’s loyalty is evident, given that he has spent his entire F1 career with the team and its junior squad. Despite his current uncertainty, Verstappen emphasized the value he places on stability: “I have been part of this team for a long time. Every driver wants to win, but it’s very easy to switch teams. That’s not what I want. I don’t want my career to be defined by four or five different teams.”

The three-time world champion is adamant about building a legacy with one team, suggesting that if he were to leave Red Bull, it would not be a decision made lightly. “I want to build a long and stable relationship with everyone in the team and feel at home somewhere,” he added, underlining his desire for continuity over constant change.

With Verstappen’s future hanging in the balance, fans and rivals alike are left wondering: will he remain the face of Red Bull or seek a new challenge before calling time on his F1 journey? Only time will tell as the paddock braces for more twists in the Verstappen saga.
