Stenhouse Jr. Edges Out Keselowski in Talladega Thriller, as Late-Block Shock Seals Victory

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. emerged victorious in Sunday’s nail-biting YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, clinching the win by a razor-thin margin of 0.006 seconds over Brad Keselowski. The dramatic finish left many, including Stenhouse himself, surprised at Keselowski’s decision not to block coming to the line.

Keselowski opted to stay in the bottom lane with Kyle Larson pushing, banking on a drag race with Stenhouse, who had William Byron behind him in the outside lane. Stenhouse’s momentum, however, proved too strong, allowing him to edge out Keselowski in a photo finish.

“They were going to split me, which is what I would do if I were them,” Keselowski explained. “I didn’t feel like I had a shot to move up in front of the No. 47. We didn’t have enough smoke with the No. 24 pushing him; he would have just driven right around us and we’d have been swallowed.”

Keselowski’s gamble didn’t pay off as he hoped. When the overtime attempt began, the field lined up in two rows: Keselowski and Larson on the inside, while Stenhouse and Byron held the outside lane. Christopher Bell and Kyle Busch occupied the third row, but Busch’s bid for a third lane fell short when no one joined him.

The final order saw Stenhouse leading Keselowski, Byron, and Larson across the finish line, with Erik Jones and Bell rounding out the top five and six respectively.

Stenhouse admitted he was stunned by Keselowski’s choice:

“I was very surprised,” Stenhouse said. “I was waiting for the block, and I was going to decide whether I was clear enough to get to his inside or hang a right and take our momentum with the No. 24. I was super shocked that he didn’t make that right-hand move.”

For Keselowski, it was another frustrating near-miss at Talladega. He had previously finished second in the spring race after a late-race move didn’t pan out, allowing Tyler Reddick to snatch the win when a crash unfolded.

“It’s a good finish for us,” Keselowski reflected. “We’ve been knocking on the door of these plate tracks. I hate that we didn’t bust through with a win, but I’m happy to be right there in contention.”

The victory marks another high-stakes triumph for Stenhouse, as the tight, strategic battle at Talladega delivered one of the most intense finishes of the season.
