Mercedes has managed a remarkable resurgence in the 2024 Formula 1 season, with three race wins and a newfound hope of championship contention. Amidst this dramatic turnaround, George Russell has pinpointed the man he believes is largely responsible for Mercedes’ revival: technical mastermind James Allison.

After stepping away from the role of technical director in 2021 to become the team’s chief technical officer, Allison returned to lead the team’s engineering efforts in 2023. Russell believes Allison’s return has been instrumental in Mercedes’ surge back to the front of the grid.

“I think James Allison’s re-involvement with the project has been an immense benefit for us,” Russell said, emphasizing that Allison brought much-needed leadership and direction to the team.

While Mercedes has always had world-class talent, Russell explained that the team lacked the clear focus to maximize its potential during the early stages of the ground-effect era. With Allison back at the helm, Mercedes’ designers and aerodynamicists have thrived, harnessing their talents more effectively. Russell also praised Allison’s wealth of experience as a game-changer for the Brackley-based outfit.

“We’ve always had this talent within the squad, but just having that clear leadership and clear direction to maximize the talent of the designers and the aerodynamicists has been vital. The experience he’s got is huge as well, so I think that has been a big factor,” Russell said.

Mercedes’ performance resurgence in 2024 has not gone unnoticed, as they climb back up the championship standings. However, Russell was quick to highlight that Red Bull’s slump this season has exaggerated Mercedes’ improvements. While Mercedes has indeed taken a step forward, Russell admitted that Red Bull’s recent struggles have widened the perceived performance gap.

“The upturn in performance from us and McLaren has definitely been quite a pleasant surprise, and maybe a bit exaggerated with Red Bull’s loss as well. I think we’ve moved forward and they’ve also come back, so it is a big swing,” Russell observed, adding that this kind of variability is a more normal part of F1 seasons.

As Russell and teammate Lewis Hamilton battle closely in the drivers’ standings, Mercedes continues to pursue a strong finish to the 2024 season. Though Ferrari has shown steady progress, Mercedes aims to keep pushing and reclaim its place at the top of the pecking order.
