RCR Owner Richard Childress Optimistic About Future Despite 2024 Struggles

Richard Childress Racing (RCR) entered the 2024 NASCAR season with high hopes, particularly after the No. 8 team clinched three victories in 2023. However, the reality of this year has been far less promising, with the team facing a series of unfortunate setbacks. From mechanical issues to driver errors and wrecks, RCR has struggled to live up to its championship potential, leaving fans and analysts wondering if the team can bounce back. But RCR owner Richard Childress remains confident that better days are ahead.

In a recent appearance on the Happy Hour podcast, Childress opened up about the difficulties his team has faced, particularly the numerous crashes that have plagued their 2024 campaign. “It’s been one of those years,” Childress admitted. “Crashes, we’ve been involved in so many crashes. I think Austin [Dillon] was involved in one in the first six races this year, so that put him so far behind. Kyle [Busch], he’s been involved in several crashes.”

Kyle Busch, who was expected to lead RCR to the next level after a strong 2023, has been the most affected by these incidents. Despite his talent, Busch has found himself wrecked while leading races multiple times. Childress revealed that he’s had conversations with Busch about the situation, with the driver acknowledging that a lack of patience might have played a role in his misfortune.

“I talked to him this morning, he said, ‘Maybe I should’ve been a little bit more patient,’ but you know, when you’ve got someone breathing down your back, you’re leading the race with 20, 25 to go, you just make the move that you think is right,” Childress shared. “I told him, ‘Man, don’t worry, we’re going to win some races.’ It’s been a tough year, but everybody has fought hard.”

Despite the tough season, Childress remains optimistic, noting that RCR is preparing for significant changes in the near future. These updates, which are set to be revealed soon, could be the key to turning around the team’s performance as they head into the 2025 season. “We see that we’ve got to make some changes. We’ve got more changes coming that you’re going to hear about in the next month, probably, and we’re excited about next year,” he said.

While 2024 has been a learning experience, Childress is adamant that history will guide RCR to a more successful future. “You know, you can’t dwell on the past, you’ve got to learn from the past. History teaches you, and that’s what we’ll learn from this year, and take it into next year with a positive attitude.”

For fans of RCR and NASCAR as a whole, the question remains: Will these changes be enough to bring the once-dominant team back to its former glory? Only time will tell if Childress’ confidence is well-founded or if RCR will continue to struggle.
