As the 2024 Formula 1 season enters its final stretch, Mercedes is gearing up for a major push with a significant car upgrade set to debut at the upcoming U.S. Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas (COTA). Described as “a fairly substantial set of new clothes,” this development package is Mercedes’ final attempt to bolster performance for the last six races of the year after a disappointing showing at the Singapore Grand Prix, where both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell struggled to find pace, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively.

The next six races will be a whirlwind, packed into eight weeks, and Mercedes is among the teams targeting COTA for a crucial upgrade. Mercedes technical director James Allison has confirmed that the team is preparing to address key issues that have hampered their performance in recent races, especially tire overheating on high-temperature circuits.

“We’ll be trying to figure out how to mitigate what ailed us in Singapore,” Allison explained. “We’re working hard to understand how to make the tires perform better on these overheating circuits, and at the same time, we’ll be bringing our last major upgrade of the season for Austin. We hope it’ll give us a strong weekend.”

This “substantial” upgrade aims to give Mercedes a more competitive edge as they continue to chase Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull in the constructors’ standings. The team has found itself falling short of race-winning performance throughout the 2024 season, but the upcoming upgrades represent their final shot at salvaging the year.

Mercedes will also be looking to give Hamilton a fitting celebration for what has been an unmatched career in Formula 1. After marking his 350th race in Singapore with a lackluster result, the team is keen to rebound at COTA and finish the season on a high note.

“Lewis has had a career that I think won’t ever be matched by any other driver,” Allison remarked. “It’s a shame that his 350th race happened on a weekend where the car wasn’t up to the challenge. But my hope is that we won’t have to wait long to celebrate — maybe we can do so in greater style at his 351st.”

With the 2024 season nearing its conclusion, Mercedes’ performance in Austin could set the tone for the remainder of the year. All eyes will be on the Silver Arrows to see if these upgrades can reignite their championship hopes or if the struggles of Singapore will carry on into the closing races.
