Title: Ott Tanak's Game-Changing Role in Toyota’s 2027 WRC Car Development: A New Era on the Horizon!

In a seismic shift that could redefine the landscape of the World Rally Championship, former champion Ott Tanak has returned to the fold, taking on a pivotal role in the development of Toyota’s groundbreaking 2027 car. This strategic move not only brings invaluable expertise to the team but also alleviates pressure on current drivers, as emphasized by nine-time world champion Sebastien Ogier.

Tanak, who clinched the world title in 2019 with Toyota, had temporarily stepped back from competitive racing this season, opting to sideline himself from the thrilling hustle of the WRC. However, his absence from the service park hasn’t dulled his connection to the sport. Instead, he has embraced a mentoring role, guiding current Toyota driver Takamoto Katsuta, a close friend, while simultaneously gearing up for a hands-on involvement in the development of the new vehicle designed to meet the stringent technical regulations set to be implemented next year.

Last week, the Estonian driver was spotted testing the 2027 prototype in Spain, traversing both asphalt and gravel terrains. This latest outing showcased a significantly revamped body shape compared to the earlier version of the car unveiled earlier this year, sparking speculation about Tanak's potential return to competitive racing should a slot open up at Toyota.

Ogier, the only current Toyota driver yet to experience the 2027 car, has lauded Tanak’s comeback, indicating that his insights could prove crucial during this transitional phase. “We have been aware of it [Tanak testing the car] for a little while obviously, but Ott I think still has some hunger and some wish to drive bit more probably, and he will tell you better than me,” Ogier remarked during the Rally Islas Canarias, hinting at a rekindled passion within Tanak after his hiatus.

This collaboration could not come at a better time, as Ogier himself faces uncertainty regarding his future in the WRC. “I think like we said at the end of last year that he was obviously not happy where he was and having at least a break maybe sometimes helps. Now he is starting to test our car. I’m sure after months of not driving it has been enjoyable again,” he added, highlighting the mutual benefits of Tanak's involvement.

The implications of Tanak's return extend far beyond mere testing. His experience and feedback will be invaluable, especially as the current drivers navigate a packed calendar. “The feedback from Ott can always be interesting, and I’m pretty sure about that. At the same time, I haven’t tested this car and I’m not sure it is going to happen soon. As we have a busy calendar, somehow, it is maybe good for the current drivers of the team as without someone doing this job, it would make the calendar very intense,” Ogier concluded.

As the countdown to the WRC’s new era intensifies, all eyes will be on Tanak and Toyota’s innovative approach. Could this be the catalyst that propels the team back to the forefront of rally racing? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: with Tanak at the wheel of development, Toyota is poised to make waves in the 2027 season and beyond. The rallying world holds its breath in anticipation!
