Vowles: Sainz an impressive achievement for Williams

Williams team principal James Vowles has expressed no regrets over the timing of Franco Colapinto’s promotion to Formula 1, despite the Argentinian’s impressive performances since replacing Logan Sargeant. Colapinto’s debut after the Dutch Grand Prix in August was marked by consistent results, including an eighth-place finish in just his second race in Azerbaijan.

Sargeant, who failed to score any points throughout the season, was replaced amid upgrades to the Williams car, which the team believed would increase its potential for regular point-scoring. While some may wonder whether Colapinto could have bolstered the team’s results had he been introduced earlier, Vowles remains confident that the timing was right.

Addressing the decision, Vowles explained that Colapinto had been meticulously developed behind the scenes throughout the season. He highlighted that Colapinto’s progress during winter preparations and his stint in Formula 2 helped to shape him into the driver ready for F1.

“If we’d done this at the beginning of the year, I don’t think you’d see the Franco you have today,” Vowles said. “He’d made strides over the winter and throughout his time in Formula 2, and we’ve done significant work with him in the simulator to prepare him for this step.”

Vowles stressed that timing the switch was crucial, noting that making such a decision is one of the most challenging responsibilities of a team principal. He wanted to ensure the team had maximized their car’s performance potential with upgrades before putting Colapinto in the cockpit.

Reflecting on Colapinto’s calm demeanor under pressure, Vowles praised the 22-year-old for his composed approach since his mid-season promotion.

“You can hear over the radio, just listen to his voice. He’s just incredibly calm and collected and just wants more information. It’s a sign of a really good individual that’s able to cope with what’s happening,” Vowles added.

With Colapinto quickly adjusting to life in F1 and consistently delivering strong performances, Williams looks poised to continue improving as the season progresses. However, Vowles stands by the timing of the switch, asserting that it was critical for Colapinto to be fully prepared to meet the demands of Formula 1.
