William Byron Battles to Runner-Up Finish in Kansas, Eyes Talladega Showdown

William Byron emerged as the top NASCAR Cup Series playoff contender at Kansas Speedway, securing a hard-fought second-place finish in the Hollywood Casino 400. While Ross Chastain took the win after a clutch move on the race’s final restart with just 20 laps to go, Byron was right behind but couldn’t close the gap.

Byron, driving for Hendrick Motorsports, quickly moved into second after the restart but couldn’t mount a serious challenge to Chastain due to one key factor: clean air. The final stage marked Byron’s best-ever finish at Kansas Speedway, but he was left wanting more.

“I feel like he had the restart he needed,” Byron said post-race. “I was in the second row just trying to clear those guys… Once I got clear, my balance was OK—just a little tight, but I needed it to be a longer run.”

Despite falling short of victory, Byron’s second-place run was a significant improvement. It marked his first top-five finish since mid-August and served as a much-needed morale boost as the playoffs intensify. Byron led 24 laps during the race, earned the most stage points (17), and won the first stage, adding a crucial playoff point to his tally.

Though victory eluded him, Byron remained optimistic: “I wanted that one really bad. It sucks being so close, especially knowing what Talladega is going to bring. But I’m proud of the effort. We brought an awesome car, and the guys have been working their tails off.”

With a solid average running position of 4.6—the best of any driver on the day—Byron showed consistency throughout the race. His performance at Kansas serves as a statement as he heads into the unpredictable Talladega round with renewed confidence.

“We know how important these tracks are,” Byron reflected. “We’re excited to keep building and keep putting weeks together like this. There’s still work to do, but today was a big step forward.”

With Talladega looming and playoff pressure mounting, Byron is set to capitalize on his momentum as he eyes a spot in the third round.
