Mercedes-Benz Issues Recall on S 580 Models Over Risk of Engine Fire: Faulty Software to Blame

Mercedes-Benz is facing a major recall of its high-end S 580 models after uncovering a critical flaw in the engine control software. According to Mercedes-Benz AG of Germany, the lambda control system may cause an increase in gasoline levels during cylinder deactivation, leading to elevated exhaust temperatures that could damage surrounding components, including the engine wiring harness. This dangerous scenario has been linked to an incorrectly programmed engine control unit (ECU), which fails to deactivate the CAMTRONIC system as intended when cylinder deactivation is engaged to conserve fuel.

The luxury automaker began investigating the issue last year after receiving numerous reports of non-start conditions, loss of propulsion, and illuminated check engine lights. Initial analysis pinpointed a lambda control deviation in the software, prompting Mercedes to conduct further investigations in early 2024. By April, the company evaluated all potentially affected software versions, culminating in this critical safety recall.

Fire Hazard and Recalls in the U.S.

In the U.S., Mercedes-Benz has documented 48 warranty reports and one potentially related fire claim linked to the faulty software, covering incidents reported between August 2021 and August 2024. The recall affects 2021 to 2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580 models and their ultra-luxurious Maybach variants, which are powered by the M176 twin-turbo V8 engine. These reports prompted Mercedes-Benz USA to file documentation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), listing 12 distinct part numbers for the compromised ECU software.

Affected Models and Recall Measures

The recall targets the 2021-2023 S 580 and Maybach S 580 models. The remedy involves updating the ECU software at no cost to affected customers, with notifications to be sent by November 26, 2024. Mercedes-Benz AG confirmed that the recall issue was rectified in new production models at the Sindelfingen plant as of September 2023.

This recall highlights a significant flaw in Mercedes’ flagship luxury sedan. The S 580 sits above the S 580e and S 500 models, with its twin-turbo V8 engine delivering superior performance. However, the plug-in hybrid S 580e produces more power, despite being slower to 60 mph by 0.5 seconds compared to the S 580.

The Stakes for Mercedes-Benz’s Luxury Lineup

The S 580 is not just any sedan; it represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz’s engineering prowess, offering unmatched luxury and performance. Beyond the standard S-Class, Mercedes offers even more opulent options in the Maybach lineup, starting with the S 580 and culminating in the V12-powered S 680. Additionally, the AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE stands as the most powerful Sonderklasse to date, combining the AMG-spec V8 with a potent rear-mounted electric motor to produce a staggering 791 horsepower and 1,055 lb-ft of torque.

As Mercedes-Benz works to address this potentially dangerous defect, the recall underscores the critical need for precise and reliable software in the high-stakes world of luxury automotive engineering.
