Sergio Perez Reflects on Future: “I Won’t Let Anyone Decide My Fate in F1”

Amid swirling rumors about his future with Red Bull, Sergio Perez, the seasoned 34-year-old Mexican F1 driver, has opened up about his thoughts on retirement and his determination to end his career on his own terms. Speculation has mounted that Red Bull may replace Perez before his contract ends in 2025, but the veteran driver remains resolute in his desire to stay in Formula 1, despite considering walking away earlier this year.

Speaking to DAZN, Perez candidly revealed, “These past six months I did think about it, but it took me three seconds to make the decision. In the end, it would be the easy route after so many years to quit and kind of give up. I would never have forgiven myself for that.”

Perez’s unwavering spirit is fueled by a desire to take control of his own destiny. “I want to finish my career when I want and not when someone tells me,” he emphasized. Currently winless this season, Perez has managed 14 top-10 finishes, including three runner-up spots, and sits eighth in the 2024 F1 standings with six races remaining. Meanwhile, his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen is on track for his fourth consecutive championship, leading the pack decisively.

Throughout his career, Perez has amassed six Grand Prix victories and 39 podium finishes, but he’s hungry for more. “For now, I am very motivated; to be honest, I really want to continue in F1. I enjoy it. Especially the good times you really enjoy, but you also learn to enjoy the bad ones,” Perez reflected, showing his resilience amid challenges.

Despite his passion, Perez doesn’t envision racing into his 40s, unlike the evergreen Fernando Alonso, who continues to compete at 43. “I will be here for at least two more years,” Perez said, noting his desire to spend more time with his young family. “However, I don’t see myself in Formula 1 for much longer.”

With his career at a crossroads, Perez’s comments underscore his commitment to racing on his terms, proving that the battle for control off the track is just as fierce as the one on it. As he navigates the final chapters of his F1 journey, Perez remains driven by the desire to leave the sport on his own accord, not by the decisions of others.
