Max Verstappen Addresses Red Bull’s Challenges and Championship Hopes for the Final Six Races

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN - SEPTEMBER 13: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing talks with Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner in the garage during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Azerbaijan at Baku City Circuit on September 13, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. During the post-race press conference, Max Verstappen shared his thoughts on Red Bull’s prospects for the remaining six races of the season, highlighting the team’s recent struggles and the challenges that lie ahead.

Q: Max, for the last six races, where do you think a Red Bull will struggle more, and where will it be easier for you to fight for a podium?

MV: “Probably street circuits we’ll struggle more, normal tracks a little bit less.”

Verstappen acknowledged that Red Bull’s performance is likely to fluctuate depending on the type of circuit. Street circuits, which have proven more difficult for the team recently, are expected to pose the most significant challenges, while more traditional tracks may offer a better opportunity to compete for podium finishes.

Q: Max, how pleased are you with the progress the team’s made from that low point in Monza? Obviously, at Azerbaijan there was a misstep, but here you’re right back up towards the front. I know it’s a big gap. So how much confidence does that give you going forward?

MV: “Yeah, pretty pleased, but still a lot of work to do. We know that. Hopefully now we can really kickstart things.”

Verstappen expressed satisfaction with the progress Red Bull has made since their disappointing performance in Monza, though he acknowledged there is still significant work ahead. The team’s upswing in form, despite setbacks like the misstep in Azerbaijan, has boosted his confidence for the remaining races. However, Verstappen emphasized the need to build momentum as the season approaches its critical final stages.

Q: Given that progress today, Red Bull took another hit in the Constructors’. But do you still feel, Max, that it’s realistic to win the Constructors’? Or should the focus just be on the Drivers’ championship now? And then for the McLaren pair, I think Lando said that the Drivers’ championship is still Max’s title to lose. Do you feel the Constructors’ is McLaren’s to lose, given the upward trend you guys are on?

MV: “We focus on performance. If the car is quick, then naturally both championships are easier to get.”

Verstappen’s response underscored the importance of focusing on performance rather than obsessing over championship standings. He believes that if Red Bull can improve their car’s pace, success in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships will follow naturally. Verstappen’s comments reflect the team’s approach of prioritizing car development and race execution as they attempt to close the gap to their rivals.

As the season nears its conclusion, Red Bull faces a mix of street circuits and traditional tracks, presenting a varied set of challenges. With Verstappen emphasizing the need to improve performance across the board, the team will be looking to refine their approach and capitalize on any opportunities that arise in the final races.
