Daniel Ricciardo Reflects on Potential End of F1 Career: ‘I’m in a Much Happier Place

Daniel Ricciardo’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, with speculation mounting that the Singapore Grand Prix may have been his last race. As rumors swirl that Red Bull is preparing to replace him with Liam Lawson for the remaining six rounds, Ricciardo is reflecting on his career with no regrets, stating he’s in a far better mental space than when he exited McLaren at the end of 2022.

Ricciardo acknowledged that there are no guarantees about his place in the Red Bull seat, and he faced the reality that his time in F1 could be coming to an end. The emotional Australian driver conceded post-race that he might have completed his final outing as Red Bull utilizes the upcoming autumn break to assess its options.

A Season of Reflection and Acceptance

Despite the uncertainty, Ricciardo emphasized that he harbors no regrets, unlike the feelings he had after his tumultuous departure from McLaren. “I think I’m in a much happier place in the sport now than I was then. If this was it, then let’s say I have a little bit more pace,” Ricciardo shared. “I’m proud of the career. I tried to become World Champion, I tried to become the best at something in the world.”

Ricciardo, an eight-time Grand Prix winner, highlighted the challenges and pressures of pursuing such a lofty goal, acknowledging that while some achieve it, others come up just short. “Some achieve it, some don’t. In the end, if I came up a little short, I also can’t be too hard on myself. Happy with the effort I put in, and for that, there’s no sadness or feeling or regret or what could have been.”

Driver of the Day: A Special Tribute from the Fans

The possibility that Ricciardo’s F1 journey could be ending inspired fans to vote him Driver of the Day, an honor that carried extra weight for the Australian under the circumstances. “I don’t think the Driver of the Day normally means much to us drivers, it’s nice, but it’s not something to brag about,” Ricciardo admitted. “But I think today the fans read the media and know this could be my last one, so I think that’s a really nice gesture from them.”

Ricciardo expressed gratitude to the fans for their recognition and support, valuing the award as a meaningful token of appreciation for his efforts and his love of racing. “I do acknowledge that, I thank them for being a part of it and acknowledging my efforts and my love for the sport.”

Reflecting on a Career Full of Highs and Lows

Ricciardo’s late pit stop to snatch the fastest lap added a light-hearted moment to his potential farewell, with Red Bull reportedly joking about a $3.5 million bonus for the effort. “I heard something about $3.5 million bonus for fastest lap, Red Bull was throwing some crazy number around!” he quipped.

In his closing remarks, Ricciardo reflected on his passion for racing and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with being an F1 driver. “Obviously, there were times it tested me, and I wasn’t always grinning ear to ear, but I felt like I always tried to have as much fun with it and leave as much as I could on track.”

As Ricciardo faces the possibility of saying goodbye to Formula 1, he does so with pride in his achievements and gratitude for the journey, leaving fans with the lasting memory of a driver who brought his infectious personality and tenacious spirit to every race. Whether or not Ricciardo returns to the grid, his impact on the sport and its community will be fondly remembered.
