George Russell Reflects on Tough Singapore GP: Mercedes Left Chasing McLaren’s Pace

George Russell managed a commendable fourth-place finish in a challenging race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, but it was clear that Mercedes had a difficult outing at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix. The team ended the race with Russell in fourth and his teammate in sixth, leaving them off the podium in a race dominated by the pacey McLarens.

Lando Norris took the victory with a commanding lead of over 20 seconds, and his teammate, Oscar Piastri, secured a comfortable third-place finish, showcasing the sheer speed of the McLaren MCL38 during the grueling night race.

Russell openly acknowledged the strength of the McLarens after the race, recognizing the challenge they posed. “It was clear that McLaren was the team to beat today,” Russell said. “We did our best to hold our ground, but they were on another level.” Despite this, Russell felt that Mercedes managed to extract the best possible result from their W15, which struggled to keep pace with the front runners on the demanding circuit.

Mercedes’ ‘Damage Limitation’ Approach

While Russell was able to fend off some fast-charging competitors, overtaking McLaren’s Piastri proved to be a step too far. “We had our hands full just managing our own race. Trying to get ahead of Piastri was a bit too much to ask,” Russell admitted. He emphasized that Mercedes did well to manage “damage limitation” at an event where their car was not the strongest contender.

The W15 faced significant challenges at Marina Bay, but Russell’s resilience and strategic driving secured a solid fourth-place finish, ensuring Mercedes left Singapore with valuable points in hand.

Looking Ahead: Mercedes Aims to Rebound After the Break

With nearly a month-long break before the next race at the Circuit of the Americas for the U.S. Grand Prix, Russell and Mercedes are hopeful that the team can make crucial improvements. “We’ve got some time now to reflect and work on the car,” Russell noted. “This break gives us a good opportunity to make the changes we need to be more competitive when we get to Austin.”

The remaining six races of the season promise intense battles across the grid. For Mercedes, the focus will be on maximizing their performance and fighting for the best possible results as they continue to push through a challenging campaign. As the season heads into its final stretch, all eyes will be on how the top teams, including Mercedes, respond to the intense competition in the fight for championship points.
