Kia Recalls 12,400 EV9 SUVs Over Brake Software Glitch Affecting Remote Parking System

Kia America has issued a recall for 12,400 vehicles, including the 2024 EV9 Land and EV9 GT-Line models, due to a software issue affecting the integrated electronic brake system. The problem, traced to the remote parking system known as RSPA 2, can cause insufficient brake pressure during low-speed maneuvers, increasing the risk of collision and potential injury to pedestrians.

Remote Parking and Brake System Glitch Explained

The RSPA 2 system enables remote parking in perpendicular, parallel, or diagonal spaces and allows drivers to exit parking spots with the push of a button. The system relies on ultrasonic sensors and a front-facing camera to identify parking spaces and lines. However, repeated stops at speeds of 2 miles per hour or less can result in inadequate brake application, leading to potential accidents.

Kia America attributes this flaw to a software error in the integrated electronic brake, specifically part number 58520-XA000, provided by Korea’s HL Mando. The recall was prompted after a report from Kia Corporation on September 2, 2024, regarding an incident in Korea where an EV9 collided with a parked vehicle while maneuvering at low speed using the RSPA 2 system. Although no similar cases have been reported in the U.S., Kia is taking proactive steps to address the issue.

Free Software Update for Affected Owners

Kia will update the faulty brake software at no cost to affected customers. The update includes improved logic to ensure sufficient brake pressure is applied in all scenarios, enhancing the vehicle’s safety when using the remote parking feature. Owners of impacted vehicles will receive notification letters on or around October 18, 2024. Alternatively, customers can check their vehicle’s status by entering the 17-character VIN on Kia’s official website.

EV9 Models: High-End Features and Pricing

The recalled models include Kia’s top-tier EV9 Land and EV9 GT-Line trims, both equipped with all-wheel drive and dual electric motors. Prices start at $69,900 for the EV9 Land and $73,900 for the GT-Line, not including destination charges and optional features. While these prices are steep for a Kia, they reflect the EV9’s comprehensive offering as a three-row crossover packed with advanced technology, a decent driving range, and luxurious amenities.

For those seeking a more affordable option, the EV9 Light RWD starts at $54,900, with the EV9 Light Long Range RWD available for $59,200. The latter boasts the longest range in the lineup, covering 304 miles on a full charge and featuring second-row captain’s chairs for added comfort.

Production in the U.S.: A New Era for Kia’s EV9

Previously manufactured in South Korea, the EV9 is now produced at Kia’s West Point assembly plant in Georgia, alongside the popular Telluride, Sorento, and Sportage models. U.S. production began in late May 2024, marking a significant step in Kia’s commitment to the North American market.

As Kia addresses this software issue, the company reinforces its dedication to safety and customer satisfaction, ensuring that advanced features like remote parking are reliable and secure. The recall highlights the importance of continuous software improvements in modern vehicles, where advanced technology plays an ever-growing role in daily driving.
