Lando Norris Strikes Back: Is the Title Race Still Alive or Is It Too Late?

Lando Norris delivered a masterclass at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, leading from lights to flag in a flawless display of dominance. However, with Max Verstappen finishing second, albeit 20.9 seconds behind, and Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull stealing the fastest lap point, the gap in the championship stands at 52 points with just six races to go. So, has Norris reignited his title hopes, or is Verstappen still in control?

Verstappen’s Gritty Defense

Despite losing out to Norris again, Verstappen’s performance was a crucial one to stem the bleeding in the championship fight. After disastrous weekends at Monza and Baku, the reigning champion needed a solid result in Singapore to stop his momentum from completely derailing. Second place was vital for Verstappen, as the weekend could have ended much worse. With Ferrari showing strong pace and Oscar Piastri struggling, a potential fifth-place finish and a 15-point swing were on the cards. But Verstappen’s grit and a little help from Ricciardo’s late fastest lap attempt kept the damage to just seven points.

While Verstappen’s form hasn’t been spectacular, his ability to limit the points lost to Norris keeps him firmly in control. Red Bull has upgrades on the horizon, and if they hit the mark, Verstappen could be back to his dominant best. His fourth title may not be the seamless triumph he had hoped for, but it could still be one of the most resilient championship wins in recent memory.

Norris’s Challenge: Time Running Out?

Norris couldn’t have done more in Singapore, but he needs to keep this level up for the rest of the season. The task is clear: win as many of the remaining races as possible and hope that other cars, like Ferrari and Piastri’s McLaren, can intervene between him and Verstappen. McLaren’s duo remains the strongest on the grid, and their collective efforts have pushed the team closer to the constructors’ championship. But missed opportunities earlier in the season—particularly strategy blunders in Hungary and Italy—could come back to haunt them if they fall short of a title double.

For Norris, the path to the title is narrow but not impossible. His current strike rate of dominating one in every two weekends since the summer break needs to continue. The critical question is whether Red Bull’s upcoming fixes at the United States Grand Prix will significantly elevate the RB20’s performance. If they do, Verstappen’s 52-point cushion should be enough to see him through. But if Red Bull remains off the pace, Verstappen will be vulnerable to more damaging weekends.

The Stakes Are High

The final six races could swing either way. Verstappen’s task is to keep finishing near the front and minimize losses, while Norris must capitalize on every chance to claw back points. The Singapore win was a statement from Norris that he’s not giving up, but the onus is on Red Bull to respond. With every race, the margins get tighter, and one misstep from either side could decide the 2024 title. Whether Verstappen limps to his fourth crown or Norris completes a stunning comeback, this championship is far from over.
