Ferrari Unveils New Front Wing in Singapore to Expand 2024 Car’s Performance Window

Ferrari Targets Broader Operating Window with New Front Wing Design
Ferrari has introduced a new front wing at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix as part of its strategy to widen the operating window of its 2024 Formula 1 car. After overcoming setbacks from a flawed development step at the Spanish Grand Prix that exacerbated high-speed bouncing, Ferrari has made strides with updates, including a successful floor change at Monza that helped Charles Leclerc secure pole position and second place in Baku.

Uncommon Move Sees Ferrari Bring Aero Upgrade to Street Circuit
It’s unusual for teams to implement significant aero upgrades at street circuits like Marina Bay, but Ferrari has fast-tracked its revised front wing design ahead of the autumn break. This move comes amid increased scrutiny on front wing compliance following suspicions surrounding McLaren’s wing design, prompting the FIA to clarify regulations.

Ferrari’s Focus on Balance and Downforce Efficiency
Ferrari’s Senior Performance Engineer, Jock Clear, explained that the new front wing isn’t specifically tailored for Singapore’s high-downforce needs but aims to improve overall car dynamics. “It’s just moving the energy a little further inboard,” Clear said. “The inboard is a bit more aggressive and the outboard a bit less aggressive, so we’ve moved that dynamic a little bit. This allows us to crank on a bit more [downforce].” The new wing is designed to provide more front-end power, especially at high-downforce circuits where Ferrari previously struggled.

Ferrari Aims for Better Balance at High-Downforce Circuits
The adjustment is intended to help Ferrari achieve a better balance, particularly crucial on the tight and twisty streets of Singapore. “Balance is everything around here, and we’ve been a little bit backed into a corner at some of the high-downforce circuits before,” Clear noted. The new wing is not only slightly more efficient but also more powerful, giving Ferrari greater scope in adjusting the car’s setup to suit different track demands.

Confidence Boost for Drivers on Street Circuits
Ferrari’s SF-24 has proven to be more predictable and stable than its predecessor, boosting driver confidence on street circuits like Singapore. Jock Clear highlighted that the car’s inherent stability has encouraged drivers to push the limits, particularly on challenging street tracks. “It’s probably testament to what I spoke about a year ago, which is not only focusing on delivering overall load but making it drivable,” Clear said, pointing out the improvements in balance and predictability that Ferrari has achieved.

Leclerc and Sainz Set to Shine on Familiar Ground
Ferrari’s drivers have shown strong form in Singapore, with Leclerc consistently near the top of the timesheets during practice sessions. Both Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who won in Singapore in 2023, are expected to perform well thanks to the SF-24’s stable characteristics. “I think we’ll see both of them strong here, because they’re willing to maybe take a little bit more risk,” Clear added, attributing their confidence to the car’s improved drivability.

As Ferrari aims to continue its resurgence in the latter half of the season, the new front wing represents a critical step in fine-tuning the SF-24 for a wider range of circuits. With the team’s focus on providing a more balanced and predictable car, Ferrari hopes to maintain its competitive edge and keep challenging at the front of the grid.
