Sauber is weighing whether to retain a familiar face or opt for a fresh talent to complement Hulkenberg’s experience. Valtteri Bottas, who has been with the team since 2022, is vying for a contract renewal. However, Sauber is also considering bringing in a younger driver, particularly as they prepare for their future as Audi.
One such prospect is Gabriel Bortoleto, the current Formula 2 championship leader. Bortoleto’s stock has been rising, and McLaren has shown willingness to negotiate a deal that could see the talented rookie land a seat at Sauber. The team’s representative, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, has confirmed that decisions will be made by Mattia Binotto, who was recently hired as Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer.
Alunni Bravi explained:
“We are evaluating all the options to see which is the best balance between short-term experience and long-term talent. Valtteri is a strong driver, but there are other opportunities. It’s not just about 2025 but also Audi’s long-term strategy.”
Franco Colapinto, who has impressed since stepping in for Williams as a mid-season replacement for Logan Sargeant, has also entered the conversation. The Argentine has drawn attention with his stellar performance in Baku, where he finished eighth, further boosting his candidacy.
With several strong contenders and no immediate rush to make a decision, Sauber’s final choice could shape its future heading into the Audi era. The team aims to finalize their decision in the coming weeks, balancing immediate needs with their long-term vision.
