Video – Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney Frustrated After First-Lap Crash in Chaotic Watkins Glen Playoff Race

The 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Round of 16 continues to deliver the unpredictability fans expected, with the latest drama unfolding at Watkins Glen’s “Go Bowling at The Glen” race. In a shocking turn of events, playoff contenders Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney found themselves out of contention before they could even complete the first lap, dealing a heavy blow to their championship hopes.

The chaos erupted when Kyle Busch’s No. 8 Chevy made contact with Corey LaJoie’s No. 7, causing Busch to spin out. The incident quickly spiraled into a multi-car wreck that collected several drivers, including Hamlin, Blaney, and Christopher Bell. While some cars managed to escape with minimal damage, Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota and Blaney’s No. 12 Ford suffered significant hits.

Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing crew scrambled to make repairs, getting him back on track, but the veteran driver could only salvage a disappointing P23 finish—eerily similar to his result the previous week. In stark contrast, Blaney’s day ended prematurely after NASCAR officials determined his car couldn’t be repaired safely, forcing him to park and eliminating any chance of a comeback in the race.

A furious Blaney didn’t hold back in his post-race comments, expressing anger toward NASCAR’s decision to sideline him. With his title defense now in serious jeopardy, Blaney will need a massive performance in the final Round of 16 race at Bristol Motor Speedway to stay in the playoff hunt.

Hamlin, reflecting on the crash, accepted partial blame, acknowledging that his poor qualifying performance had put him in the wrong place at the wrong time. “If I’d qualified better, I wouldn’t have been caught up in the mess,” Hamlin admitted. Despite the frustration, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver remains hopeful for redemption at Bristol, a track where he’s previously found success. The veteran driver emphasized that tire wear management will be critical in next week’s race, and he’s confident he can deliver the performance needed to stay in the playoffs.

Entering Watkins Glen, Hamlin was just two points above the playoff cutline, but his P23 finish has now left him six points below. With only one race left to secure a spot in the Round of 12, Hamlin knows that a top-three finish, along with critical stage points, is the only way to keep his championship hopes alive.

As for Blaney, his championship defense is now hanging by a thread, and all eyes will be on him at Bristol as he fights to stay in the playoff conversation. Both drivers will need near-flawless performances to keep their 2024 title hopes alive in what promises to be a high-stakes race under the lights.
