Hamilton and Ocon to Start from Pit Lane in Baku After Power Unit Penalty, Norris Facing Uphill Battle

In a dramatic turn of events ahead of Sunday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will now start from the pit lane after Mercedes exceeded his power unit allowance and made significant setup changes to his car. This decision comes after Hamilton initially qualified P7, one spot behind championship leader Max Verstappen.

Mercedes’ modifications, deemed a breach of regulations, were confirmed by FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer, and Hamilton will now be joined by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, who is also starting from the pit lane after facing similar issues.

Lando Norris, McLaren’s title hopeful, had a dismal qualifying session on Saturday, only managing 17th place after being hindered by a yellow flag. However, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly disqualified due to a fuel flow irregularity, Norris was promoted to P16. Despite this, his chances for a strong result seem slim as he trails Verstappen by a daunting 62 points in the championship, making this race a crucial moment of damage limitation.

Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will lead the pack from pole position, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri beside him on the front row. The Baku City Circuit is known for its overtaking opportunities, offering plenty of action ahead. But with both Hamilton and Norris battling from difficult starting positions, Sunday’s race promises to be a strategic showdown as drivers fight for critical points.

All eyes will be on Leclerc and Piastri as they lead into the first corner, while Verstappen looks to extend his lead and Norris aims to minimize the damage in the title race.
