Hamilton Laments Qualifying Struggles as Tyre Woes Continue at Baku

Lewis Hamilton’s frustrating 2024 qualifying season hit another low at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as he found himself lining up seventh on the grid, significantly trailing his Mercedes teammate George Russell, who now leads their qualifying head-to-head 14-4. Despite the car’s potential, Hamilton has struggled with a recurring issue: getting the Pirelli tyres up to the optimal temperature for peak performance.

The seven-time world champion expressed his frustration with the tyre temperature challenge, which has been a persistent problem throughout the season. Hamilton believes this issue is undermining his Saturday performances, attributing his struggles to both his aggressive driving style and the finicky nature of the Pirelli tyres, which are extremely sensitive to temperature variations.

“That was 100% the issue,” Hamilton told F1 TV after qualifying in Baku. “We have a car that could have been on the front row, at least third or fourth. But the tyres weren’t working the whole day for me.”

Hamilton’s qualifying difficulties this season have overshadowed his undeniable race pace. The tyre problems came into sharp focus earlier in the year after an anonymous tip-off suggested Mercedes was intentionally sabotaging his car by underheating the tyres—a claim Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff swiftly denied.

Despite two victories this season, including a standout performance at Silverstone, Hamilton’s qualifying form has been out of sync with his race-day results. The Brit has often found himself fighting to climb up the order on Sundays, a stark contrast to Russell’s consistent Saturday success.

Looking ahead to the race, Hamilton remains optimistic about his chances, knowing his racecraft and ability to manage tyre degradation are key strengths. “It’s a long race tomorrow and anything can happen. I think looking after the tyres and maximizing their performance is going to be key,” he added.

With Hamilton eyeing a recovery in Baku and a potential third victory of the season, tyre management will undoubtedly be the deciding factor in his quest for success.
