F1 FANS REJOICE: The Return of Iconic V8 Engines is ON the Horizon!
In a monumental announcement that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport world, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has officially confirmed that Formula 1 will make a spectacular return to V8 engines at the dawn of the next decade! The thrilling prospect has been brewing for quite some time, but it has recently gained serious momentum following widespread dissatisfaction with the current hybrid power units that divide energy 50-50 between combustion and electric sources.
Last year, Ben Sulayem hinted at his ambitious vision for F1 to revert to either V8 or V10 engines powered by sustainable fuels, a concept that had initially been met with resistance from power unit manufacturers after they committed to the complex hybrid systems. However, a seismic shift in the landscape is now underway as the current power unit has proven to be not only exorbitantly expensive but also cumbersome due to the weight of the batteries required for the electrical components.
As manufacturers shift their focus away from electrification toward sustainable fuels, the door is wide open for the return of the much-beloved V8 engines, which last roared to life in Formula 1 from 2006 to 2013. “It’s coming,” Ben Sulayem declared emphatically to a select group of journalists. “Oh yes, it is coming. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of time.”
The FIA is poised to reclaim power over the regulations by 2031, freeing itself from the voting constraints of power unit manufacturers. Ben Sulayem is pushing for an earlier rollout in 2030, as fans and stakeholders eagerly demand a return to the visceral excitement that V8 engines bring to the track.
“We want to simplify the technology,” he asserted, advocating for a less complicated engine design. “The MGU-H was supposed to provide a benefit, but none of the manufacturers gained anything tangible from it in the real world. Now, with just the MGU-K, we’re talking about a turbocharged, 1.6-litre engine that is far more effective.”
While the return of V10 engines is off the table due to their lack of relevance in the current automotive landscape, the V8 remains the preferred choice. “The V8 is the most popular and easiest to work with,” Ben Sulayem noted, highlighting its captivating sound and lightweight design. “You’ll hear about it very soon, and it will feature very minimal electrification, shifting away from the current 46-54 power split.”
Major automotive brands like Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, and Cadillac are already utilizing V8 engines in their road cars, making this transition not just feasible but exciting for fans and manufacturers alike.
When asked for a timeline on this electrifying change, Ben Sulayem confidently stated, “I’m targeting 2030. One year before the maturity of the regulations. It will happen.” He remained optimistic about manufacturers' receptiveness, saying, “They want it to happen. But even if they don’t support it, it will be done. V8 is coming!”
Hold onto your seats, F1 enthusiasts! The iconic roar of V8 engines is set to return, promising a thrilling revival for fans and a game-changing shift for the sport. The countdown to 2030 has officially begun, and the excitement is palpable!
