For the first time in 2023, Williams placed both of its drivers in the top ten of a Formula 1 race, with Logan Sargeant scoring his first points. The rookie finished tenth in the United States Grand Prix in Austin, competing at home – this after the disqualifications of Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) ahead of him.
The American did not hide his pride and emotion: ‘It’s fantastic to score my first point in F1 at home after the challenging weekend I had. I am so proud of this team and myself for the hard work and progress we have made this season. We worked hard after Saturday to find a positive direction with the car, and we found it. We couldn’t change much on the car in parc fermé, but we worked on the systems using the tools on my steering wheel to help move the car in the right direction’.
Sargeant spoke of a considerable improvement in the performance of his car, in a race hindered by a situation early on: ‘The pace was much better in the race, and I was driving really well. I had a great start, but it was unfortunate to hit the big curb in turn one and go into anti-stall, which cost me a few places. That changed the race a bit, but we reacted, and I gave everything on every lap. We made steps in the right direction that we can build on and move forward as we go to Mexico’.
