VW has revealed that it is working with the German start-up Revoltech GmbH, based in Darmstadt, to develop sustainable materials made from industrial hemp, which will be integrated into the interiors of the brand’s models starting in 2028.
The new materials, which will replace faux leather finishes, are made from 100% organic hemp, utilize waste from the regional hemp industry, and can be produced in existing industrial factories and converted into compost at the end of a vehicle’s life cycle.
“In our search for new materials, we are very open to new ideas from various industries. In the Technical Development Department, we particularly focus on creative and sustainable solutions that contribute to more efficient vehicle development and help save resources.”, says Kai Grünitz, a member of the Technical Development Board at Volkswagen.
Our innovative surface material, called LOVR and developed specifically for the automotive industry, combines hemp fibers with a fully organic label through a special technology and processed to become a surface material. This circular lifecycle material is sourced from regional hemp fields and is fully recyclable or compostable when it reaches the end of its lifespan.
