Horner Calls on McLaren to Choose a Leader in F1 Title Fight Against Verstappen because it’s ‘impossible’ for McLaren to win the title with Papaya rules

Christian Horner has issued a stark warning to McLaren, urging the team to prioritize one driver if they hope to challenge Max Verstappen for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship. McLaren’s decision to allow both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to race each other freely at the Italian Grand Prix has raised questions about the team’s strategy in the tight title race.

McLaren started the race from the front row, with Norris on pole, but the team’s inability to convert that advantage into a victory has left them with a critical decision to make. Piastri overtook Norris at the end of the first lap, and while both drivers ended up on the podium, it was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who took the win, leaving McLaren to settle for second and third.

Horner, who watched as Red Bull’s own championship hopes hang in the balance, criticized McLaren’s approach, stating that the team’s indecision could cost them the title. He emphasized that McLaren must soon decide to back one driver over the other if they want to pose a serious threat to Verstappen’s lead.

“From a championship perspective, McLaren’s current strategy actually played into our hands,” Horner said. “It’s always tough for a team to make the call, but eventually, you have to focus on your best chance for the title. When you have two strong drivers, the situation becomes even more complicated.”

McLaren’s decision to implement their so-called ‘Papaya rules’—which allow the drivers to race but with caution—came under scrutiny from Horner, who noted that the strategy nearly backfired. The close battle between Norris and Piastri at the second chicane almost resulted in an accident, which could have derailed their entire race.

“McLaren’s approach nearly caused their drivers to crash, and that could have been disastrous,” Horner continued. “When Leclerc passed both McLarens, it actually helped us in the championship. McLaren needs to be more decisive if they want to challenge for the title.”

As the season progresses and the championship fight intensifies, McLaren’s management will face increasing pressure to prioritize one driver to keep their title hopes alive. Horner’s comments underline the tough decisions that lie ahead for the team as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
