McLaren CEO Zak Brown has reaffirmed the team’s commitment to treating both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as equal contenders, drawing parallels to the team’s storied past with legends Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. This approach, he says, is key to McLaren’s recent resurgence, which has seen the team consistently challenge for top positions in Formula 1.

The Italian Grand Prix highlighted the intense intra-team battle, with Norris and Piastri starting from the front row. Despite securing pole position, Norris was unable to convert it into a win, finishing third behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Piastri, who overtook Norris at the end of the first lap, gave a strong performance but was also unable to secure the victory. The result has left McLaren in a precarious position, as they consider whether to back Norris in his title challenge against Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Brown emphasized that McLaren’s philosophy of giving both drivers equal opportunities is a cornerstone of their racing strategy. This approach, reminiscent of the fierce rivalry between Senna and Prost during their time at McLaren, creates a competitive environment that pushes both drivers to excel. “We’ve always believed in treating our drivers equally, and this isn’t new for us. It’s how McLaren operated with Senna and Prost, and it’s how we operate today with Lando and Oscar,” Brown said.

Despite the equal treatment, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has hinted that the team may need to prioritize Norris in the title fight, given his closer proximity to Verstappen in the standings. However, Brown pointed out that the decision isn’t straightforward, as both drivers are performing at a high level, making it difficult to favor one over the other without disrupting team dynamics.

The situation is further complicated by McLaren’s tight battle with Red Bull in the Constructors’ Championship, where they currently trail by just eight points. Brown acknowledged that supporting both drivers is crucial for McLaren’s title hopes, as they need every point to overtake Red Bull. “Our focus right now is on maximizing points for both drivers,” Brown explained. “We need both Lando and Oscar to continue scoring heavily if we’re to take the lead in the Constructors’ Championship.”

As McLaren navigates this delicate balance, the team’s dual ‘Number 1’ strategy will be tested to its limits. With the championship fight heating up, McLaren’s ability to manage its two talented drivers could be the key to dethroning Red Bull and securing both titles.
