The trade of electric and hybrid vehicles in the European Union (EU) has skyrocketed between 2017 and 2022, representing 42% of imports and 26% of automobile exports.
According to data revealed this Monday, November 6th, by Eurostat, hybrid vehicles accounted for 6% of the total imported cars and 0.4% of those exported by the EU, while plug-in hybrid models accounted for 7% and 4%, respectively. Fully electric vehicles represented 15% of imports and 9% of exports. In total, in 2022, hybrid and electric vehicle imports accounted for €37 billion and exports for €59.1 billion. Electric and hybrid vehicles were the largest traded category, with the United Kingdom in first place among exporting countries to the EU (€3.4 billion, 21% of the total), followed by Japan (€2.8 billion, 18%) and Turkey (€2.5 billion, 15%). The United States (€8.7 billion, 30% of the total), the United Kingdom (€4.5 billion, 16%) and Norway (€4.3 billion, 15%) were the main importers of hybrid vehicles from the EU.
