Liam Lawson and Schumacher in the Mix as Williams Considers Replacing Sargeant Mid-Season

The 2024 Formula 1 season may see a significant shakeup at Williams as the team reportedly weighs the option of replacing struggling driver Logan Sargeant before the campaign concludes. With Sargeant set to lose his seat to Carlos Sainz in 2025, and his recent crash during FP3 at the Dutch Grand Prix further damaging his standing, Williams boss James Vowles is rumored to be exploring alternative drivers for the remainder of the season.

Two prominent names have emerged as potential candidates for the seat: Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson and Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher. Both drivers come with strong backing from their respective teams, who have indicated a willingness to negotiate short-term deals with Williams.

Liam Lawson, who impressed during his stint with AlphaTauri last season, is a strong contender. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has expressed openness to a temporary loan, provided that Lawson could be recalled quickly if needed. “We’d certainly… if they needed a driver next weekend, we’d be open to that,” Horner told the media. “But that’s a Williams question rather than one for us.”

Meanwhile, Mick Schumacher, who has been biding his time as a reserve driver with Mercedes after being dropped by Haas at the end of 2022, is another viable option. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been vocal in his support for Schumacher, arguing that the young driver deserves another opportunity in F1. “You’re not winning F4, F3, and F2 and then you’re not performing in F1… I think he deserves a chance,” Wolff stated. He added that a move to Williams would have Mercedes’ full backing if Vowles decides to give Schumacher the nod.

While Lawson and Schumacher appear to be the front-runners, one name that has been ruled out is Mercedes protege Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Despite his rapid rise and plans to eventually replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025, Wolff confirmed that Antonelli will remain on his current developmental path, focusing on Testing of Previous Car (TPC) sessions and Formula 2, rather than making an early jump to F1 with Williams.

As Williams contemplates its next move, the pressure is on Sargeant to improve his performance, or he may find himself sidelined sooner than expected. With both Red Bull and Mercedes ready to assist, the Grove-based team has options at its disposal as it seeks to bolster its driver lineup for the remainder of the season.
