Verstappen Unfazed by Mercedes’ Interest Amid Ongoing Speculation

Max Verstappen’s Remarkable Run Faces New Challenges Amid Red Bull Turmoil

Max Verstappen has remained cool in response to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s continued interest in signing the Red Bull driver, stating that he sees “nothing wrong” with Wolff’s public desire to bring him onboard in the future. Wolff’s pursuit of Verstappen has been no secret, especially following the announcement of Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025, leaving a potential opening at Mercedes.

The interest from Mercedes comes amid a turbulent period at Red Bull, where Verstappen’s loyalty has been tested due to internal strife. Earlier this year, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was cleared of allegations of inappropriate behavior, but the incident further strained relations with Jos Verstappen, Max’s father. Wolff, who has maintained a strong relationship with the Verstappen camp, reportedly discussed a possible switch during the summer break.

When asked about these discussions, Verstappen played down the significance of any meetings, responding initially with, “Which meeting?” and later saying, “I don’t remember.” Despite the rumors, Verstappen, who is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, has not called on Wolff to stop his attempts to lure him away. “Everyone can say what they want,” Verstappen remarked, adding that Wolff’s openness about Mercedes’ situation, including their driver lineup, is understandable. “I just focus on my job. There’s a lot to do anyway.”

Wolff, for his part, revealed that discussions with Verstappen’s representatives ended with an understanding that the Dutchman will remain with Red Bull through 2025. This has led to increased speculation that Mercedes Junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be promoted to fill the seat alongside George Russell.

Wolff hinted that an announcement regarding Mercedes’ second driver could be made as early as the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, which takes place next weekend. When asked about the timing, Wolff said, “We are giving ourselves a little bit of time… It’s going to arrive eventually.” He added that Monza would be a fitting venue for such an announcement, given the significance of the circuit and the passion of the Italian fans.

For now, Verstappen remains focused on his current campaign with Red Bull, while Wolff and Mercedes continue to look to the future, keeping all options open as they prepare for the post-Hamilton era.
